419665 2006-01-10 03:47:00 2day im sitting at one of my mothers friend's houses and im fixing their computer, windows ME and windows XP. the xp machine has 2 network ports, the windows ME has 1. i connected the wire between the 2 computer and anotehr to the internet. using a proxy to share the internet connection. the n2d network port is provided via a cheap $15 pci network adaptor.
now ive plug all teh wires in and the XP machine says teh wire connecting it to the ME machine is unplugged, and as far as i can tell, ME doesnt know ther IS a cable, let alone if its plugged in or not.
im tempted to install winXP as its got a sempron 2500+ with like 480MB ram.
so i know winXP will run, all her daughter does is play the sims and sims2, not much multitasking i imagine.
if i had knoppix id boot to that and check out the nature of teh connection, but i lost the discs so thats out of the question.
unless i can get this fixed for them ill be installing XP on it later this week.
may take a few days for her to get ahold of the CD though.

419666 2006-01-10 03:49:00 Is it a cross-over cable between the 2 machines? CYaBro (73)
419667 2006-01-10 03:51:00 i assume they are patch cables, which ought to work since i have a similar setup at home which works perfectly apart from the dodgy wifi (see my other post). Mirddes (10)
419668 2006-01-10 03:52:00 1. Have u entered the ip addresses in, for ME and XP manually?

2. Are you using a hub, or a crossover cable, to connect ME and XP??

3. Given both the same workgroup name?

419669 2006-01-10 03:54:00 entered in teh ip addresses manually, direct connecton via patch cable. workgroup is 'bob' Mirddes (10)

If it hasnt got the crossover at the end it wont work.

Unless u have a hub, which doesn't need a crossover cable.

419672 2006-01-10 03:56:00 but on my network it works eitherway, like my laptop and my rig at home are connected via a switch, but thats only because ive had several small lans recently, usually i just have my 20m cat6 patch cable running from the laptop inside to my rig in the garage, direct connection, with my rig connecting to the internet (which is exactly the same as what im attemptign to do with my mum's friend's computers, albeit they are on the same desk.
so i dont see how beign a crossover or patch cable ought to change matters.

419673 2006-01-10 04:03:00 Well exactly if u mean a switch as in a hub, then you dont need a crossover .

(With both going thru the hub) .

BUT, without a hub, u need a crossover cable .

Altho, I think CAT6 can be connected directly, whereas CAT 5 can't .

You need a crossover or a hub .
