419705 2006-01-10 01:51:00 I am going to swap over the hard drives in a couple of my computers. I have found myself a copy of ghost 9.

Is ghost able to make an image of my 20 gig hard drive & store it on a network drive, then ghost it onto a 25 gig partition on my 80 gig hard drive (without wiping all the other partitions on the destination drive)? The computer only has room for 1 hard drive, so everything will have to be done over the network.

I think I can get a copy of true image if that would be better suited.

I have a 20 gig partition free on the 80 gig drive, so I could restore off the hard drive if I can create the image over the network.

419706 2006-01-10 19:44:00 If the current image is C: and the partition that you want to restore back to is C: then yes. However if you want to rerstore it back to a partition other than C: say D: there is a good chance it won't Boot up. If that is the case you may have to do a "repair install" on the OS in the new partition to setup the boot section. You may also have to again store the Ghost partition.

I went thru this setup last year and that's what happened to me and how I overcame it..

419707 2006-01-10 21:26:00 Ghost is very flexible regarding partition sizes, upwards and downwards (if there's enough space.)

Ghost has been around forever, and has proved to be very reliable. I've heard TrueImage reputation is very good also.

As far as the computer only having room for one drive, most PC's have two IDE headers, which support four drives.

Though it's a little risky, you can *temporarily* put the hard drive on the drive cage, with a piece of paper underneath it to provide electrical isolation, and leave the PC cover off.

419708 2006-01-11 06:27:00 just got my new DVD writer so chucked my old one in the compaq & had a look at the insides.
It only has 2 molex connectors - one for the hard drive & 1 for the optical drive.
It has 2 IDE cables, but they both only have 1 connector on them (plus the connector that plugs into the motherboard).

I've decided to go with true image since it seems to be able to backup everything while still in windows. I'll have to work out how to create a boot disk/CD for restoring it on the other hard drive.

419709 2006-01-11 07:22:00 The free version of this program will do what you want ie 1:n, but it will take about 8 hours for 40gig. I know, I did almost exactly what you are wanting to do last night with this program. Very easy to understand and use.

419710 2006-01-11 07:43:00 Can that program backup to DVD? I have just discovered that my wireless network connection is too flakey for backing up over the network & my computer doesn't like the drivers for the onboard network card. Greven (91)
419711 2006-01-11 08:19:00 It is a purely a HDD cloning program. No other functions offered. On the existing system, connect the recipient larger HDD as a slave, correctly partitioned in your case, make the boot disk then copy across, a time consuming process but I am communicating to you now on the updated 80gig HDD with 6 partitions that I transfered from an older 40gig system that had 3 partitions last night from midnight until 9.00 this morning. Booted up no problems this morning running on a brand new HDD. zqwerty (97)

True. However I wouldn't attempt to restore it back while still in Windows!

419713 2006-01-11 20:42:00 For what it's worth, replacing the IDE cable(s) with ones that support two drives is pretty easy. There are two variations, but if you remove the cable and take it down to your local PC shop or Dick Smith, I'm sure they'd have what you have in stock.

As far as power, again the "Y" molex power connectors is the same's true.
