419405 2006-01-09 09:43:00 If I open Windows explorer and select the E: drive it takes about 30 seconds for it to finally show all the folders and files.

This is happening on a 4 day old system with all the bells and whistles that includes a Seagate SATA II 160GB drive

I have a C:, D: and E: that are 10GB, 20GB, 20GB NTFS partitions respectively.

This is a repeatable problem. What can I do?

Thanks,

Glenn

419406 2006-01-09 18:54:00 Run chkdsk on it. pctek (84)
419407 2006-01-09 20:47:00 Do the chkdsk first.

Start... Run...
"Cmd" or "Command" (depending on version of Windows)
Chkdsk E: /f
exit

The drive might be heavily fragmented.

Right-click "My computer"
Manage
Disk fragmenter.

Worst case scenario: the hard drive is having hardware problems.

419408 2006-01-10 07:30:00 I tried what you said but I didn't understand what I was seeing so I defragmented the E: anyway. Here are the chkdsk results before and after

E:\>chkdsk e: /f

But it still takes 30 seconds for Explorer to open my files. However, it has no problems with C: or E:

However, I've just checked explorer again (after typing everything above) and have made another observation. If I open the E: by selecting it from the file tree on the left hand side panel. i.e expand the "My Computer" branch and then select E:, it takes 30 seconds to load.

But, if I select "My Computer" from the file tree and then select E: from the right hand side panel details view (not using the file tree) then it opens instantaneously. It also works fine when I create a desktop shortcut. Phew.

Go figure. Perhaps I should do an XP update and try my luck. An explanation would be nice but I don't expect to get one. Good that it appears to not be a hardware issue. Looks like I'm just going to have to change my file browsing habits.

Thanks for your help
