419385 2006-01-09 09:30:00 Hi All

Just a quick question -- I currently run 2 IDE hard drives and 2 optical drives in my PC.
My motherboard supports both IDE & SATA drives.
I was wondering if it was possible to run an additional (SATA) hard drive alongside the 2 IDE-based drives?
The SATA drive would be a data-only drive (in effect a "slave" drive although I do appreciate that SATA drives are 'jumperless').
I'm reasonably certain that I can but just wanted to check with you learned forum members just for clarification & reassurance.

Given that this would now give a total of 5 drives in my PC. I'd assume that it would be wise to look at whether my PSU is up to the task -- currently I have a 420W W008RAC Thermaltake PSU installed -- any thoughts??

My old 250W (PC Co) PSU managed a P4 with 2 optical drives and 2 harddrives :)

419388 2006-01-09 18:29:00 On some mainboards, enabling SATA drives disables one of the IDE channels. I' d hate to repeat it, but can't you check your m/b's manual?

I have an ASUS p4p800E-deluxe, and it supports both SATA and IDE, but on my LINUX system, one IDE channel is disabled..

419389 2006-01-09 20:43:00 Yup, I think on the ASUS P4P800, if you use an OS other than Windows 2k/XP, it also disables an IDE channel. If you use SATA and IDE.

420W should be enough.

419390 2006-01-09 22:21:00 Seeing as this is on SATA and IDE I'll ask here :D, is it possible to have windows loaded on multiple SATA HDDs in RAID 0?

But, I will also contribute to this thread's purpose .

I have an 80Gb IDE HDD sitting here and I worked out the power it consumes (not sure if that is max or what) on the +5V it says it uses 0.72A which means 3.6W, and on the +12V it says 0.35A which means 4.2W, not sure about SATA though, although I guess it won't be much difference, if any.

As for the optical I have a 52X 32X 52X CDRW and that uses 7.5W on the +5V line, and 18W on the +12V line.

Without knowing your full specs adding another HDD is unlikely to put you over the 420W

HTH

419391 2006-01-09 23:28:00 Why would u want RAID 0 on multiple SATA's??

If one dies, the rest go with it. Its not exactly the safest RAID to use.

419392 2006-01-09 23:40:00 Yes I know but the only thing is it will make the computer run a lot faster, program load times anyway :D. I will have a 160Gb IDE and do backups of all important data regularly, it is just something to reduce load times, if it works that is.

RAID 0 that is the fast one, that spreads the data over multiple drives, am I right?

419393 2006-01-09 23:47:00 Info here ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/RAID_0" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) on the different RAID's .

Well not necessarily, the speed of the system / and ram may also help in the loading of Windows, and programs .

I use a 120gb SATA here as the main bootdisk, alongside an 80 GB IDE .

I notice no diff at all, just running 1 of each . XP and programs load just as quick .

Defragging may also make things load faster .

419394 2006-01-09 23:59:00 The speed of the system will be heaps.

This is just as an idea for the new rig :D

So basicly, what you are saying is that it is not worth the data loss for the small amount of preformance increase, if any?

Nope defragging wont help, new rig, nothing installed :p
