419374 2006-01-09 09:20:00 Is this a good card? www.ascent.co.nz
I need it to run Fable (As the current MX 440 doesnt), it will also need to have the Glass effect in Vista.

Is this a good card?

Thanks

419375 2006-01-09 09:36:00 It would probably be okay game wise but as for Vista the definitive word on what will be reqiuired graphics-wise for that is still rather uncertain and subject to a great deal of speculation.
Until Microsoft actually oficially disclose the final minimum specs thatn its rather hard to say. Aditionally Vista is currently tipped to be released in 7 different types/flavours which my/probably will have different "eye candy" features.
Currently everything I look at rates the Nvidia 6600GT chipset as the best AGP-based budget (value for money) chipset around although you'd be looking at $310-$320 for a card with that chipset.
By all means purchase from Ascent as they are fantastic to deal with -- I have purchased through them on numerous occasions and they are always prompt, efficient and fnatastic to deal with ..

Thanks

419377 2006-01-09 09:44:00 Ok Wikipedia it reckons that any Radeon 9500 or above will work (i know this could change though)

419378 2006-01-09 16:42:00 I had a Raedon 9800 and was not satisfied with it. Sold it on Trade Me for $200.
I now have a Raedon x800xl. Even that is not perfect.
So what you need depends on how critical you are and what you can afford.

419379 2006-01-09 22:37:00 I dont really care how good quility it is, its only running on a cheap, cr**py lcd screen anyway.

It just needs to be able to play most of the new games, and run Vista without any problems

419380 2006-01-10 01:56:00 Gigabyte makes a fanless Nvidia 6600 GT, which is quiet, has a good price, and adequate performance.

It's $340, so it may be out of your price range.

419381 2006-01-10 04:24:00 The 9600PRO is'nt going to play "most new games", but it saying that Microsoft had vista running on 9600's at CES. nVidia is rumored to be releasing the 7300 very shortly, which is a low end card that will offer performance very similar to the 9600. So realistically the 9600 should really be considered a low end card now days. Now to me it doesn't make sense to buy a low end card if i was inteeded to play "most of the new games".

If i was you i would wait a few months and save a bit more money, and then consider atleast the 6600GT, but preferably the x800XL. ATI and nVidia are both about to release new cores, so i'd hold out, as it wouldnt surprise me if we saw a new mid range core from both manufactuers that offered better performance than the 6600GT for the same price.

Oh these new mid range core's will drop the price of all the agp cards then? Or will they come out in agp too?

419383 2006-01-10 04:46:00 Sleepy ive got no idea, its just a guess really. Other than the x1600 that never really showed up there hasnt been a new mid range core from either manufactuer in a while. I would expect any new mid range cores to be avaliable in AGP, but doubt highend cores would be. Generally manufactuers will limit supply of current gen cards before the release of any new cores, meaning that when new cores are released very few old cards are avaliable so you have to be quick to get a good deal.
