| 419312 | 2006-01-09 01:06:00 | A friend with XP/SP-2 and a lot of security has just recently gotten a message from Wndows saying: "Windows is shutting down . . . there are other people logged onto your computer . . etc" and the puter is frozen and won't respond to anything les than a reset button . You cannot access the task manager . . . just shut it off . The system was running very well with all the things that were installed still installed . . . no changes to soft- or hardware . The problem only happens when she gets called away from the puter for more than 7 or 8 minutes . If she gets right back to the program she's running . . . all is well . If she takes a break longer than the 8 or so minutes, it is locked up with that error message . I have set the monitors/drives to "never shut off" and even invoked no screen saver . I have shut off Hibernate too . System restore is shut down and Windows firewall is enabled . It's behind a Linksys Router and a dsl modem that is working well enough . . . although they have the new semi-crippled Verizon cheaper dsl that is about 3x dial speeds . I have run all the anti-stuff and HJT too . . found nothing astray . Any ideas? :help: |

| 419313 | 2006-01-09 01:23:00 | The "other people..." bit is a red herring, as it simply means directories are being shared on the local network. Windows is advising accordingly. Check the event viewer to see what it shows, as to where the shutdown came from? |

| 419314 | 2006-01-09 03:03:00 | Event Viewer says: The ASCTRM service failed to start due to the following errors: The system cannot find the file specified. |

| 419315 | 2006-01-09 03:12:00 | Do you see an event in the event viwer that says "last shutdown was unexpected"? You may want to enable auditing of login / logout events. It's a trivial amount of overhead, but can definitely point to the problem. |
