419395 2006-01-10 00:01:00 So basically, what you are saying is that it is not worth the data loss for the small amount of preformance increase, if any?

You got it. :D

Well, u could try, just dont use RAID 0.

419396 2006-01-10 00:12:00 Thought so, just one of those I wonder if that will work ideas :D

But what other RAID configurations are there that allow fast speeds?

419397 2006-01-10 00:19:00 Read the Wikipedia site I posted on RAID .

Some RAID configurations are better / more reliable than others .

BUT not all motherboards support all the different kinds of RAID u can use .

Unless you buy something like a PCI RAID card, which supports the specific kind of RAID you want to use .

Systems may also go slow (if you've just formatted, and u have a reasonably fast system, and quite a bit of ram), if you dont install the chipset drivers .

After u install Windows . . . . some devices may not function / work properly without the chipset drivers installed .

I take it, you have 2 SATA's of the same size?

419398 2006-01-10 00:34:00 Ok I am going to read it in more depth now.

You take it wrong :p I have no SATAs was looking at that as an idea, just going to stick with my 160Gb IDE at the moment

419399 2006-01-10 01:50:00 the only thing is it will make the computer run a lot faster,

419400 2006-01-10 02:07:00 I'd only use RAID0 for the pagefile, temp directories and backup copies. In other words, no files that are even remotely significant.

If you only have two drives then RAID1 is the choice I'd make, sometime called disk mirroring. In theory, it has slightly better read times and no penalty in write performance. However I think the performance increase is trivial; it's main function in life is protecting your data.

Of course, if your computer's stolen or your house sets on fire, a RAID is not going to help, no matter how fancy.

419401 2006-01-10 02:17:00 Ok, I thought from what I have heard it was faster, but the person was obviously wrong. :groan:

Thanks for clearing that up Speedy, pctek and kingdragonfly, I will be sticking with normal, non RAID configurations :)

Also thanks Chemical Ali for letting me ask my question in your thread

419402 2006-01-10 05:01:00 RAID 0 isnt that bad, ive been running 2x120gb Seagate IDE drives in RAID 0 for the last 2 years without any problems what so ever . There is a small performance increase but it isnt really all that noticable, there was a huge big debate on the internet about a year or so ago about whether RAID 0 actually offered any noticable performance increases . Several big name reviews site had big write ups on the topic, the generally consensus was that it wasnt really worth the risk .

RAID 1 is such a waste of harddrive space, its only for the really paranoid . Seagate offers 5yr warrentys with there drives, if their drives were likely to fail within 5 years they wouldnt offer warrenties that long . Harddrives have been around for so long manufactuers are starting to get very very good at making them .

If you interested in RAID have a look at RAID 5, i think the nForce4 supports RAID 5 im not sure so dont quote me on that . Anyway it offers the beneftis of RAID 0 with redundancy, unfortunately you'll need 3 drives for it to work .

419403 2006-01-10 06:02:00 RAID 0 is well worth it. however it is very touchy. you must have the right chipset, the right stripe size and most important have the whole lot match your type of USAGE.
eg if you set it up for small file use it goes poorly on big file use. most people don't bother hence with some its fast and with some its slow.

RAID 5 is great but requires hardware RAID which is very exspencive and very few motherboards have it.

419404 2006-01-10 09:44:00 yea i have a 250 gig sata 2 and a 200gig ide hard drive and i have thw os on the sata and my games and movies on my other ide so it runs alot faster and i think this is better than running raid 0

cheers dconline
