419228 2006-01-08 23:45:00 Dude, even with a dial-up connection, your playing a dangerous game if you don't use a firewall. I'd wager you're already infected with some form of Internet nasty.

What's the difference between a broadband and dial-up connection using Windows? You get infected faster with broadband. :)

419229 2006-01-09 00:31:00 Well, if I am infected by some Internet nasty, it hasn’t effected the computers performance and AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot can’t find it.

Hence, I find it hard to justify putting up with Zone Alarm and the detrimental effect it has on the computers performance.

419231 2006-01-09 00:56:00 Hey, it's your computer. Do what you will.

From my perspective, there's little difference in security between a PC with a dial-up connection, and one with broadband.

I'd bet if you had some form of firewall installed, you'd see plenty of port scans on your PC.

419232 2006-01-09 03:18:00 Unfortunately, I don’t know any more to tell you Scouse. From Robbies post it would appear he has encountered the same resource hunger of Zone Alarm.

Your not wrong Kingdragonfly, when I had Zone Alarm installed the supposed scanning of my ports was like machine gun fire. Haven’t got the faintest idea what it was detecting. I’m afraid I dismissed it like a lot of these spyware programmes that find a thousand bits of spyware when Spybot, Ad-Aware & HijackThis cant find any.

But, this will get some of you going. A mate of mine who’s a manager in IT doesn’t run any antivirus on his personal computer. Nope, recons if it gets past his ISP then it will probably get past anything he might install. He claims he has never had a virus since the ISP’s started scanning for them and when I think of it, nor have I.

I look forward to some comment on this one! ;)

In the meantime zqwerty I’m sitting here waiting for some action to test my new programme and not a thing is happening. Wouldn’t you know it! :D

419233 2006-01-09 05:31:00 You DON'T have to install a firewall or an AV on your system at all .

Just dont install dodgy software, or go to dodgy sites .

And keep windows up to date .

You'll be quite safe .

BUT, if u use XP, I would still install SP1 or 2, so u actually stay on the net, if you format your hdd . So, u dont get hit by Blaster etc .

419234 2006-01-09 07:24:00 Dead right Speedy, there seems to be a fair bit of paranoia about firewalls and anti virus software.

I’m still waiting for a Y2K attack. :D

A lot of reputable reports say that if you're online for more than 40 minutes without a firewall you'll be infected with a huge range of problems .

419236 2006-01-10 01:50:00 Sometimes, whilst on the Internet the two little computers on the bottom task bar start flashing madly when in fact I shouldn’t be connected to a site. :)

With no firewall your little comps in the taskbar should be flashing constantly if not fully lit up. Come on BM! Surfing without a firewall is like driving on the wrong side of the road. Doesnt do anyone any favours. There are plenty of other firewalls beside Zone Alarm. Do a bit of googling and find one that suits you.
Just as an after thought how about posting your HijackThis Log here and give us some more laughs.

Well no, not if its updated and up to date . Thats how you get attacked in the first place, by Windows vulnerabilities .

If MS made a proper OS in the first place, then people would have less chance of getting hacked / attacked .

Sites may say this and that, BUT I wouldnt rely on what they say .

And using P2P programs .

And using programs like MSN Messenger (or programs hackers love attacking, coz they HATE the people who make them) won't help either .

If you use any programs like these (or programs that let people have access to your system), of course you'll have probs .
