420109 2006-01-11 06:21:00 Hello . .

My problem is something I have never seen or heard of before . I was wondering if anyone has any idea what I can do to correct the issue .

Everytime I turn on my PC I get these colored bars filling the screen, kinda like a bar code of color . The screen blinks a few times then stops . In order to turn it off I have to hold the power button in . After numerous tries and sometimes doing a restart with a ctrl/alt-del it will boot up .

The thing is thats buging me is that it appears that xp is booting up but all I see if that barcode of color . I have an MSI motherboard with one of those light indicators if anything shows wrong and all the lights are green .

I tried a few different monitors so I know its the PC thats causing the problem . The video card is a Nvidia geforce4 ti4200 . I am thinking it may be something I installed .

Oh this is a new format and I never used the vid card before either(ebay) . After the format I had no problems restarting or shutting off the machine for about 8 hours after installation .

Thank you . .

420111 2006-01-11 07:17:00 So this is with a new second hard graphic card? Was the card known to work OK before? Did you install it yourself? Check that the card is firmly in the AGP slot. What sort of card did you have before? Did you completely remove the old video drivers before installing the nVidia one?

Welcome to PressF1 as well. :)

420112 2006-01-11 07:39:00 Does the machine boot up ok using the onboard graphics (does the mobo have onboard graphics.. should do). Double check BIOS settings as well (re graphics). There is usually a setting to switch between onboard and AGP.

What sort of motherboard do you have?

420114 2006-01-11 20:49:00 Sounds very much like garbage being written to the video RAM. Several things can do it, from bad RAM, RAM timing, or even a driver's buffer overflow.

If you see the "colour bars" from the beginning, even before the Windows first splash screen, it's almost guaranteed to be a bad video card. If it happens during/after the Windows splash screen, it's probably a bad driver.

The motherboard lights are pretty much useless for debugging.
