2006-01-11 05:59:00 | I think something is wrong with my computers USB ports, or something is wrong with my computer and it is preventing the USB ports from working properly . I have two separate problems that make me think this . (I have a year-old gateway with Windows XP home edition, which runs fairly well, except for the usual crap that happens to all Windows computers . ) 1) Now when I connect my iPod, iTunes wont recognize it . Usually, iTunes comes up automatically when I connected the iPod . The iPod shows up in My Computer, and the battery charges, so I know the USB port works . BUT iTunes doesnt list the iPod as being plugged in . I have the most up-to-date programs . 2) I recently bought the Nintendo Wifi USB Connector to play my Nintendo DS online . When I put in the installation cd, everything went fine, but when it asks me to plug in the connector, I have a problem . I plug the connector into a USB port (I know it works because the green light on the device comes on and the new hardware message shows up on my screen), but even after I install everything, the please connect the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector message stays up . So, I know the USB device is plugged in and is working, but something isnt recognizing it as such . Basically, the USB ports are working and the PC recognizes what is plugged into them, but certain programs dont recognize what is plugged in . Its like there is something blocking parts of the PC from recognizing certain things plugged into the USB ports . There are a few similar instances too that Ive come across, but I cant think of them off hand . The computer shows stuff as plugged in, but certain programs that should automatically respond just dont . HELP!!

2006-01-11 06:07:00 | I take it SP1 or 2 is installed? If not, SP1 or 2 has to be installed. If SP1 or 2 has been installed, I would check device manager with the Ipod and the wifi adapter plugged in. Does the Ipod appear under disk drives? If not, I would go back to device manager / usb controllers entry/entries delete them all and reboot. They'll come back. See what happens then.

I clicked on device manager in the control panel>system icon, and there is nothing listed... do I have to do something once I open device manager for stuff to show up? |

2006-01-11 06:50:00 | Hmm install the chipset drivers off the motherboard cd, if these havent been installed yet . There should be + entries in device manager . You click on the +'s to see whatever is there, under whatever entry .

2006-01-11 09:16:00 | Through a different message board, someone advised me to download and run aproposfix (I went to: www.5starsupport.com). I started in safe mode, followed the instructions, and everything is working fine now. Definitely fixed it :) | pantala51191 (9586) | |
2006-01-11 09:44:00 | Since Aproposfix cured the symptoms, it seems fairly certain that the original cause was "malware" (virus/trojan/spyware/adware etc) that was interfering with the correct operation of your PC. You need to take appropriate steps to ensure that it now gets correctly cleaned out and to look at how your PC got infected in the first place.

2006-01-11 19:03:00 | Yup, by the looks of it its malware, or this update ( . microsoft . com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-047 . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) that gives u an empty device manager, and makes u lose USB . Some people who have removed this update, seem to get their device manager / USB ports back .
