419772 2006-01-10 06:32:00 I recently started having problems with my computer and so anticipating a hard drive failure I copied my Eudora Data folder to a USB external drive.
(in retrospect after reading the entries on the Eudora Forum, I cannot be sure whether I did or did not take the precaution of closing Eudora before I did the backup copy of the Eudora folder)
Now having experienced the anticipated hard drive failure I am having difficulty in reconstituting Eudora on my backup computer.
Specifically after reinstalling Eudora on another computer, I then copy the (previously backed up) Eudora Data folder to the Eudora folder in Application Data on the new computer, at this point I get an Error message which refers to Eudora.log files which are read only or locked.
I have in fact checked that (the backed up) Eudora folder is not "Read only" and I am not sure why it would be locked.
My original computer (from which the backup was made) was running Win XP SP2 but my stand in temp computer in which I am trying to restore Eudora is an older one running Win 98.
I had been using Eudora v 7.0

419773 2006-01-10 07:04:00 Try this with Eudora closed.
Select Start > Find: Files or Folders
In the Named: field, type EUDORA.LOG
Rename Eudora.log to Eudora.old
Restart Eudora.
Safari (3993)
419774 2006-01-10 07:04:00 uninstall eudora. copy backup copy over then reinstall.

BTW did you copy the data folder as well as the qualcom folder?

I have already tried this in fact I deleted the log files...to no effect.

tweak'e:

I only copied the Eudora folder.
I am not exactly sure what you mean by "copy backup copy over "
Please explain.
Thanks.

419776 2006-01-10 22:23:00 uninstal any eudora thats installed. delete any eudora folders. then copy the backup you made of the original eudora folder and paste it into the new loacation.

then reinstall eudora, it should find the old files and set everything up.

if you run multi users and/or W2k/XP the data folder is often in a different location to the main eudora folder and contains all the emails, attachments, settings etc. if you didn't save it you will have lost everything.

This is actually an ongoing problem that Foxymx was trying to help me with.
She was going away for a bit and actually suggested I post the question on line in the hopes that you would respond to it since you actually have helped me in the past.
(In fact you also set up my satellite connection at my home)
On Foxymx suggestion I have already done the following:
Uninstalled Eudora totally.
Then I set up a specific Data folder C:\qualcomm\Eudora
In which I have pasted the backed up Eudora folder into this location.
I have also checked it is not read only or "locked" as far as I am aware.
Then I re-installed Eudora and during the install I direct Eudora to install the Data folder to the location that I have already pasted the (previously Backed up)Eudora folder.
Following this Eudora does in fact load and I can see all my regular settings mailboxes and address book in place....BUT it refuses to work properly
I now get an error message
Could not open C:\Eudora\In.mbx for writing
Cause: access permission denied. File may be marked as read only or locked[13]
It also will not load new messages, it will not create or send messages and eventually it just crashes.
If you like I can PM you screen shots of the Error messages.
Thanks for your help.
