419751 2006-01-10 06:20:00 My friend has just a new Asus laptop from Dick Smith a couple of weeks ago. He got it for audio production work, and we have been struggling to get it to perform. I have posted about that problem in an other thread. But I think I may have found another problem and the possible cause of the original problem.

The basic specs are:

Processor: Intel® Pentium® M processor 740 (1.73GHz, 2MB On-Die L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB)
Memory: 512MB DDR2 533MHz SDRAM
Hard Drive: 80GB 4200rpm

We have ben trying to find the cpu hogging resource that has been mysteriously slowing down the notebook, but to no avail.

Just now I have checked the system properties:
(control panel>system>general tab)
and found that the specs are shown correctly, but the speed is not.

the display reads....
Intel® Pentium® M processor 740 1.73GHz
794MHz, 512mb of Ram
Physical address extension.

Shouldn't the 794MHz read 1.73GHz???

Could this be why the laptop has been not able to deliver the results expected???

Any help or explanations of what that number should be would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

419752 2006-01-10 07:01:00 The CPU has slown itself down to save power.

There should be a Power Saving program installed. On my Toshiba it has this and changing the slider slows it down to +/- 700mhz. Maybe the ASUS has this too.

Yes, but I have disabled the power settings and its connected to the mains so it should be running at full power, shouldn;t it?

OK I have just figured out even though I have disabled the power management program and the notebook was connected to the wall, this was still throttling the cpu. After enabling the power management software and setting it to 'Game' setting, the speed has jumped back up to 1.73ghz.
:badpc:
I am now reinstalling everything I have spend the evening taking off, (I thought I would be returning the notebook tomorrow  ), should take me the best part of all tonight to get everything back on the notebook.

Boy, do I feel stoopid right about now.

Thanks for the help Prescott, and everyone else in the other thread. Much appreciated.

419755 2006-01-10 11:41:00 OK, after reinstalling EVERYTHING back onto the notebook, we are still having the exact same problem with the usb sound device not working with a low latency buffer as it should.

The notebook is back now running at 1.73 GHz but still no joy...

Anyone have any ideas as to what may be the problem?

419756 2006-01-10 19:22:00 What is the usb sound device , Mantis?

I presume you're trying to capture audio [ vs dealing with MIDI ] and you're getting unacceptable latency . What production software are you using ? Are you using ASIO or ASIO2 drivers ?

419757 2006-01-10 20:35:00 Download the updated drivers, probably from the DSE site, or the ASUS site. Prescott (11)
