420831 2006-01-14 01:14:00 abuot sums it up.
the 2 dvd drives in my system, ones a 12X reader and the other is a BTC 16x dual layer burner.
i downloaded windows vista decmber CTP build 5270 the otehr day and burnt it with my parents laptop dvd burner as the btc was in teh shop being replaced.
i tried booting it using the dvd reader but it acted as tehre was nothign tehre, so i tried it on the laptop and it booted to vista perfectly, but i didnt install it as my dad doesnt want it on his laptop till hes seen what its like on my computer, but atleast i knwo the disc works.
i went down to the shop to pick up my dvd burner, came home put it in, and same thing, acts like theres no disc and just boots to XP.
i cant be stuffed getting it to work but i woudl like a workaround like a CD image that will then let me boot from a dvd - like what they used to do with floppies. ive booted CDs 100s of times in the past when using linux live cds ect, and on the dozen windows REinstalls i had to do to my comptuer one afternoon.

420832 2006-01-14 08:46:00 Hmm according to this site, and other sites (www.winsupersite.com)

Secure Startup ensures that a PC hasn't been tampered with since the system was last booted, and it protects the PC from brute force electronic attacks that are typically launched via attached storage devices. The goal here is physical security: Secure Startup is effective against malicious users that sit down with a stolen or physically compromised laptop or desktop PC and try to hack into the system. When Secure Startup is enabled, you can no longer boot your PC with a CD/DVD, USB-attached storage, or bootable floppy disk. Secure Startup was present in previous Vista builds.

Maybe its this feature thats stopping/blocking dvd access?

But then, I dont know if this/it means if Vista has been installed already, or
if you try and do a clean install (which by the looks of it, this is what you're trying to do)?

Were/Are you trying to do a clean install, or trying to boot the dvd/cd from within windows, to install over a current version of Windows? Just so u can see the Install Window for Vista?

Also, I've read on different sites, if you've got hacked firmware on your DVD, / or old DVD's, it wont work in Vista.

420834 2006-01-14 19:13:00 Did u go into the BIOS, and change the bootdisk, to one of the DVD's?

Otherwise, it will boot straight into XP.

420835 2006-01-14 22:59:00 yeah i did, seems to just ingore it. Mirddes (10)
420836 2006-01-15 00:32:00 Was the disk you used a RW? That sometimes gives troubles with bootable CDs which won't; I suspect it could also be a problem with DVDs. It would be drive/system dependent. Graham L (2)
420837 2006-01-15 00:35:00 just transonic DVD-R discs from the wharehouse. Mirddes (10)
420838 2006-01-15 10:54:00 ok heres an update.
i pop teh vista boot cd into my drive and reboot my machine.
my comptuer posts then asks me for my passwork so it can boot to an OS (i love security) then i get a blackscreen
with a small white line up the top left corner, a horozontal line that i, and its flashing, this carries on for abuot 5-10min.
then eventually somethign happens , my heart stops because i hope so much that vista is about to work, then i get eh winXP logo, loadign ect, then it says something abuot one or more of my disks and them neeign to be checked for consistancy, then im taken to the welcom screen, then i log in, and it takes forever, i dont like BTC drives anymore =(.
is there any hope for me?

420839 2006-01-15 20:38:00 What format was Vista in when you downloaded it?

Was it an iso file?

And what do you use to burn it to a DVD? What program?

420840 2006-01-15 22:22:00 I had this problem when I created a Windows XP SP2 Slipstream disk from Linux using K3B (this is not the reason I had the problem though), the disc worked in one computer (from a CD-RW drive), but would not work from another (which was a DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive).

I would have the same problem as you are experiencing with a white underscore in the top left corner blinking.

Basically to fix it, I just recreated the disc again using Nero this time, making sure the bootable sector was written correctly. Even the slightest misalignment can throw off a DVD drive (since they are more accurate). You may want to slow the write speed down for more reliability.

Cheers,
