420622 2006-01-13 00:43:00 I have been perplexed at the slow initializing of the modem under kppp.

Modem is a Dynalink external 1456VQE serial connected to Com 1
I have been through the link process:

ln -s /dev/ttyS0/dev/modem

In addition, I have checked out the configuration in the window that pops up whenever I endeavour to connect to my ISP.

I don't think it is something to do with Mepis itself. This is because I have also got Knopppix 3.9 from a Linux User magazine. It uses kppp and exhibits the same slow initialization (about 45 seconds until the modem starts to dial).
I also burned an ISO of Knoppix 4 from the DVD with NZ PC World last issue. When I configure up kppp from within Knoppix 4, the same thing happens.

My old Linux distro is Xandros 3.01 OCE. It uses a totally different dialer (Konnect). Xandros had no trouble locating my modem - in fact, when I bought this modem about the end of November last, I didn't even get the computer to look for it. I merely asked it to dial in on the old Speedcom settings and it did. Dialling from Xandros takes place immediately. Why the difference?

The forums at Mepislovers have plenty of comments about slow initialization of kppp. From my reading of the postings, I can't see that anyone has come up with an answer. Perhaps the problem doesn't exist with broadband so the real experts have not had to come to terms with it.

I did find one dialler (Kwvdial latest release 1.55 [December 30 2005] but could only find a tar.gz file and its required wvstreams 4.2.1. The latter is a fairly hefty download at 56 k. But, I then face the compiling problem again.

Thoughts please folks.

Cheers,

420623 2006-01-13 17:41:00 Problem solved thanks to a poster on the Mepis forum.

Greenhat prompted me to look at the initialization string. I changed that from ATZ to AT&F (or, AT&F1 - that doesn't seem to matter). However, that change didn't solve the whole problem. What did bring the dramatic improvement was my reducing the post initialization delay from 50 to 7. That has enabled the modem to commence dialing immediately and to make a connection.

Cheers,

Jim
