I was forced to reformat my old HP Pavillion running windows 98. Have been going through the tedious task of reinstalling everything :)

Now this is not a new problem as it happens every time I do a format on this PC.

When I try reinstalling certain programs, thunderbird and firefox being a couple of examples, I click on the .exe file and a box comes up and does the 0-100% extracting, a new box appears and says initialising... a 3rd box appears and reads verifying integrity.... all as it should, BUT then it just disappears and nothing else happens, no setup screen etc...

I always fix the problem by installing IE5.5 (system came with IE4) and the instalation of FF and thunderbird proceeds as expected. However I loath IE and on the small harddrive this system has, even the minimal install of IE takes up 35 MB which could be better used elsewhere :)

Does anyone know what little files that get installed with IE are required to allow other programs to be installed?

I installed the VBruntime6sp5 files which fixed the problem of installing some programs like ccleaner (it came up with a message saying certain file was missing), but it didn't fix the ff and thunderbird problem.

Cheers

420646 2006-01-12 23:22:00 The problem is, I suspect that WIndows Explorer itself relies on many of the files and functionality of IE, it will be quite global in that respect.

Its unlikely to be one or two "little files", its quite an "upgrade" of the entire Windows core when IE gets upgraded from v4.

I find that rather odd . I have setup systems with Win98 and non-MS internet software heaps of times and have never had to install IE5 . 5 .
I'd take a look on the Mozilla forum to see if there is something there about it .
I can't comment on those but I have never had a problem installing actual Mozilla on older Win98 systems .

Anyway why not set it up as you have already - then uninstall IE5 . 5 then this time make a Ghost image of the install so nect time you only have to restore it back without all this hassle .

But I don't have ghost or any other imaging software to do so:)

420651 2006-01-13 06:08:00 You can just use pkzip to zip the entire harddrive file/folder structure once you have it setup the way you want (boot to DOS to do this).
Burn the zip file to a CD.
Create a boot floppy (http://www.bootdisk.com) that gives you CD access and copy pkunzip to it.

When you need to reinstall, boot from the floppy and use pkunzip to unzip the previously saved zip file to the harddisk.

Note: this only works for the Win 9x and earliers versions of Windows.
