2006-01-13 07:58:00 | My old Dell ran eight years without fault, my wife has it now. My new Dell is 3 months old with no problems. I would stress I am not a power user, I don't do games but use it as a home business computer. I can't comment on the Dell help desk as I have never had to use it. Their internet ordering system is pretty slick I had 2 phone calls and 3 emails to confirm details and to give me some special offers before a 6 day delivery period. 19" ultra sharp screen is brilliant. PC Authority mag, or was it the other Aussie mag gave it a great write up. Colours at factory setting are a bit bright for my taste but, but trimming them back 5-7% fixed that. | tutaenui (1724) | |
2006-01-13 09:34:00 | I love Dell (& HP & Compaq) -- I make a tidy part time income cause of the quality of their componentry, their recovery options (hidden partition etc.) and their utterly hopeless after sales support -- Go Dell!! They (Dell) do however make excellent widesreen/ large size LCDs -- their 24" LCD in particular has had several rave reviews and I want one -- possibly if they keep selling crap PCs I may even be able to save the $1900-odd I need :)

2006-01-13 09:42:00 | Hmmm...for $1900 I could have the ceiling raised, which would give me a bigger space to point the projector at.... | Metla (12) | |
2006-01-13 09:44:00 | Yeah I saw that, just seems to big for me to be a PC monitor and not good enough/too expensive to be a TV/game console screen etc ... But still if the missus bought me one for Xmas she'd get the best 30 seconds of her life! (B4 I rush off to my new 30" screen!) ... :)

2006-01-13 16:25:00 | I have three Dells in my workshop now, all have failed parts in them. Speaking from experience, and being tongue in cheek here, I would expect more in the future, as a lot of my work comes from people owning Dell machines. As long as they buy Dell I have a good future in repairs. Having said that, people that buy HP Compaq or Packard Bell computers also keeps me in business. In saying that, some people have no trouble at all with them. My :2cents: worth People who service the machines that people buy that are not done by warrenty are the worse people to comment. Why? Because they see the worse things that happen. You say that you have three in your workshop now but how many PC's have Dell sold? The failure rate is probably very low in comparison as to how many are sold. You would find exactly the same type of thing with every single item in the world that is sold. Some of them are going to fail and the people that service or repair them will see those. They wont see all the ones that still work perfectly.

2006-01-13 20:19:00 | Thank you, Big John, I'm glad someone understands my rationale. To quote the only point made by Metla that is worth considering, "has the whole world gone mad?" It seems the answer is no. Sanity prevails. Thanks again to everyone for the "interesting" debate and worthwhile comments.
