420512 2006-01-13 01:05:00 Nomad, is that comedy?

People don't want quality or an OS cd? I would beg to differ, so would anyone who has had a hardrive die and finds they have lost their OS, there programs and all their drivers....

Sure, If thats what your after, Go the Dell.

420513 2006-01-13 01:17:00 I would say that most people don't *know* they want an OS CD, and they don't know what quality is, so they trust the big company. Greven (91)

Exactly, Which is why we are in a position to inform them. And having industry experience should not discount that.

Or has the whole world gone mad?,Does nothing matter now apart from marketing?

Baa Baa said the sheep.

420515 2006-01-13 01:21:00 They are for the avg person out there. I think Dell is v good for that, esp the warranty and price.
But then again the many Dells on television are $1199 or maybe $899 at the Warehouse, included with a 19 inch LCD I am sure you can't buy that much more with a off brand PC. You simply cannot compare it to a much more expensive off brand PC with better parts,
Why assume the average person, whatever that is - should settle for rubbish?

And especially the warranty? Are you kidding? I give full manufacturers warranty on all the parts that go into mine - not this 1 year unless you pay extra con.
And it comes back to me. After they ring me.

Not ring a foreign country then find out what 3rd party to take it to for days if not weeks for repair.
And yes you can build a PC with quality parts for roughly the same price - but it might be $1200 rather than $1199.

420516 2006-01-13 01:24:00 Not sure how many people take their computer along to a PC repair shop for service just because it has been 6 or 12 months since the last service. This suggests to me that you only get to see the bad side, hardly a valid sample.

As stated, I am looking for recent experiences; I may be wrong, but I suspect that issues arising in the first year, at least, are addressed by Dell themselves.

You would be wrong. A lot of techs work involves software. Often I see a PC because of issues with malware or installation of some peripheral. Then you discover other things. And hear the stories. So its not just the hardware fixes after the pathetic 1 year warranty has expired that techs see.

As for Dells support are you aware they closed a large part of their website - specifically the one where customers could post comments - and complaints?
Now I wonder why they would do such a thing.....wouldn't have anything to do with bad press of course.

This thread should be retitles Good Opinions Only wanted on Dell.

420517 2006-01-13 01:35:00 I make more profit upgrading/fixing a Dell than selling a similar computer at the same price that I built. Go Dell!!

If you want good value for money you will get a custome built rig from a local computer shop, Harvey Norman/Noel Leaming/Dick Smith are not computer shops.

If you want bad value for money you should look to Dell, HP etc.

420518 2006-01-13 01:48:00 Yeah, its like all these companies that run their bizzo on a PC Company rig .

You want me to replace the mobo, reload the OS and recover all your data?

No worries, That small amount you saved by buying rubbish and a fair bit more will now go me for doing the work . . . . .

Just a little bit of advice, If your running your books on a cheap comp, Make backups of your data, and start budgeting for a new comp . The headaches will be far less in the longrun .

Especially if its a PC Company rig, They are time bombs .

420519 2006-01-13 02:18:00 If you only wanted user opinions on Dell rather than helpful input from people who (generally) know what they're talking about, then you came to the wrong place.

This is a self help forum filled with a mixture of professional and home techs (as well as users). Disregarding their opinions is a bit of a slap in the face.

May I suggest you might be more at home doing a Google search (www.google.com), or checking out some (www.epinions.com) of (http:) the (reviews-zdnet.com.com) many (http:) sites (http://www.devhardware.com) dedicated to reviews and opinions.

420520 2006-01-13 02:40:00 A Dell may not be as good as a custom made PC, but many pple buy them .

Many pple do not know what to look for when buying a PC . The average Jim may well just buy a Corolla . Sure they may do a test drive, but I doubt they know what to listen for . Now I am sure some of the guys will throw a swing that I mentioned Corollas . Arn't they the most popular model cars in NZ :help:

The facts are big brands sell more computers . Worst quality but people buy them .

To the avg person . Adding Ram or HD - they send it away to be done . Formatting computer and reinstall - they post a question or get computer friends with the know how to do it .

I know someone who is based in Chc got a "good local dealer" PC after my suggestion . However he has recently got ADSL 2Mbit and got a friend to install it for him . He also asked me about how to secure his wifi connection . Obviously due to his computer skills and how networking is a touchy subject, I advised him to see his friend again . He has however asked when am I going to Chc as I wanna do some skiing private tuition . Its pehaps he wants me to have a look of his PC for him . I am certain that I will need to update his spyware/virus definitions, remind him to backup files, if he wants to upgrade his RAM then I could do it for him or secure his wifi if its not already done . He prob does not have a firewall either . I have asked him to do it . . but it goes in one ear and out the other . Even if he had one in place he may not know exactly when to provide access and when to deny access . For him he prob just add some HD or RAM or else just buy a new PC . He probably won't upgrade the sound card or add a real video card into it .

Ahh . . yes maybe this is comedy to computer know how's .
