420631 2006-01-13 03:56:00 Hi everyone

Following on from bob_doe_nz's post for beta testers for his Shutdown programme (nice work Tony!), I too would like some testers for a couple of small applications I have written.

The programmes include a number base converter (e.g. convert from base 10 to base 2 or base 16 etc.) and a number combinations calculator. They can be downloaded from here. (www.bizequip.co.nz)

I've tested them on Win98 and XP Pro SP2, but would like to see if they work on on other versions of Windows (or even Linux for that matter! - the automatic e-mail function won't work on Linux). Win98 won't open the combinations file (for the life of me I can't get that to work) but I'd like to know if that part fails on Windows ME and 2000.

I also have a small utility that seems to go ok on XP but would like more opinions on that. It's a utility that extracts information from your PC like your processor speed, hard drive serial number, MAC address etc. It has a few issues getting some information out of Win98 but again I'd like to know how it goes on other Windows operating systems (especially 2000, this one definitely won't work on Linux). Please note that this programme accesses the registry but doesn't make any changes to it.

Please post any problems, issues, comments, thoughts and / or suggestions in this thread, or PM me if you like.

There's also a 'meaning of life' programme there that may require testing too....

Cheers, Andrew

420634 2006-01-13 05:28:00 What if you have more than 1 hdd?

It looks like MYPCInfo found the IDE but not the SATA .

And it just lists 000000000000 as the MAC .

What if u have more than one network card/MAC address?

This is with XP SP2 .

Hi Speedy

At the moment it is seeking 'DRIVE0' which I believe (based on my tests) is the boot drive - I suspect your OS is the IDE drive and not the SATA? At the moment it is ignoring additional hard drives, although I will add room for additional drives sometime soon .

The MAC address : I believe it is picking up the first device that may contain a MAC address . Sometimes the first device doesn't have an address hence the 0000000000 . That's not to say the LAN port / card doesn't have an address - my programme sometimes picks up the wrong item to test, which I'm aware of and need to sort out . What's your PC brand / motherboard? I'm also looking at dual NIC situations for the next version . . .

Thanks, Andrew

Yeah - it's a bit of fun. The dot net is hard to get my head around although it integrates better with the OS than VB6.

No = SATA is the bootdisk - 120 GB, as 3rd Master .

IDE is Master Primary . BUT not bootable .

Ok . Cool!

Sounds good!

What's your PC brand / motherboard?

Homebuilt ASUS P4P800, onboard gigabit LAN, 8 USB, internal USB 2 card reader, 1 GB . And USB wireless adapter .

Ok - that might exaplin why it picked up the details from the IDE drive . I'm having some trouble with Asus motherboards so I might get it to loop through and grab the next MAC address . I thought my PC only had one such 'device' but if I loop through all possibilities, there are about 5 or 6!

Cheers, A

BTW, I forgot to mention previously that these are really small downloads (less than 50KB each) .
