420887	2006-01-14 03:09:00	My friend has been having continuous USB problems with an external sound device. We have tried every possible solution to fix the problem, including replacing the notebook. When he got the new notebook everything was fine until all of a sudden when he turned his laptop back on, the problem was there again. He has also done a rollback to when it was working fine, and a complete system recovery, both did not help the problem. It seems something is throttling the cpu or usb... Is there any way to test the usb ports to see what speed they are in fact working on? We want to check if they may be being throttled by something or maybe even running at USB1.0 speeds rather then USB2.0 speeds? Could there be anything else that is effecting the usb speeds? Thanks. 420889	2006-01-14 04:28:00	If USB 2 is onboard, check the BIOS, to see if its on Hispeed (480 mbps), or on Full speed (12 mbps). I just checked the bios, there is no usb setting I could find. The notebook is an Asus A6VC, Pentium M Centrino 1.73, with 512mb Ram. There is 4 usb slots on the back. Is there any other way to check? Thanks. M.	Mantis (3703)

420892	2006-01-14 05:12:00	So he's using a USB 2 soundcard? What other USB 2 devices are plugged into the 4 USB ports?? Maybe a USB 2 hub is needed? You could most probably test the speed if there's a USB 2 hdd, or an Ipod there . Copy a lot of files and see how long it takes for the files to copy . Did it get replaced with SP2?? or did u install SP2?? If u installed SP2, when did u install SP2?? If u installed SP2 recently, delete the usb entries in device manager and reboot . XP will re-detect them . Its a usb sound device yes . There is nothing else plugged into the usb ports on the notebook . It came with SP2 installed . Is there anyway to test or monitor cpu speed as well? I'm thinking it may be some sort of throttling . . . We have disabled the power management program but this makes no difefference . The usb sound device works great on a higher buffer setting, but it SHOULD work and has done (2 days ago) work with the lowest possible buffer setting . Yet something is causing USB dropouts . . . . 420894	2006-01-14 05:46:00	If this also helps, Under device system> devicemanager> usb host controllers> the usb audio device shows up under the properties for the usb universal host controller, NOT the usb2 universal host controller . . . should it be under the usb2 hostcontroller?	Mantis (3703)

A program like CPUz I think its called, should show u how fast the CPU is . Or a program from Intel for laptops/notebooks . Cant remember the name tho . There's nothing in device manager with a ? beside it is there? He is using the Notebook and USB sound device for audio production so its vital . I've had a look at the asus boad but have found nothing . There is nothing in the device manager with a ? beside it . The notebook uses something called power4gear+ for power management . Unforunately there is very very little documentation with the program . I think this may be somehow causing some problems, we tried uninstalling it but that didn;t seem to make a difference .
