421512 2006-01-15 23:06:00 How do i set this up? :p
instructions please :P
I want to be able to transfer files and share internet between my laptop and desktop. Both running XP.

421513 2006-01-15 23:30:00 Plug the cable into your network cards, then go to my network places >> add a place. Repeat on 2nd computer.

XP makes it very, very easy.

421514 2006-01-15 23:39:00 Install drivers for noth network cards/devices.

Connect them to the crossover cable.

Goto Control Panel / Network Connections / right click / Properties / Click TCP/IP and click Properties.

Click 'use the following IP address'.

Give an Ip Address of say 192.168.1.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for one device and IP Address of 192.168.1.2 with subnet of 255.255.255.0 for the other device. Click OK button twice. Reboot if nesscary.

Click Start / Run / cmd / press enter.

from one machine, ping the IP address of the other system.

If successful you should get 4 pings and replies straight away with zero loss.

If not, check your firewall if its on as you may have to turn it off and/or allow it access.

On Computer A, add the name of the user on Computer B that will be used to access Computer A. e.g if Computer a = bob, Computer b = mary...
Then on Computer A create a new user called mary and on Comp b create user called bob.

right click the hard drive that you want shared. Click sharing and security... Follow instructions there...

I'm probably wrong so slap me silly if I am. ;)

You're technically right, but you don't have to have the same username on both computers anymore - just use simple file sharing & click "allow users to change my files".

If superuser is right, it is far easier than I ever thought. I usually do sharing the traditional way

421516 2006-01-16 06:36:00 Damn that was easy! :p thanks.

Meh, i might aswell keep it in this thread while im here...
What about a wireless network between 2 laptops?. Both have wifi cards, and XP.
Prescott (11)
421517 2006-01-16 06:41:00 If the WIFI cards came with their own drivers/programs for configuring them, use that instead of XP's wireless wizard (If SP2 is installed).

Just configure the WIFI cards the same (as in entering the ips etc) as if they were normal ethernet LANS.

421518 2006-01-16 07:07:00 They are the internal built in ones. Prescott (11)
421519 2006-01-16 07:39:00 Just configure them under My network places. Give each one an ip address and enable file sharing if u wanna share a folder.

There must be something besides XP Wireless wizard there somewhere, if both are onboard.

421520 2006-01-16 23:04:00 Oh it seems like a very similar concept to the cross over cable. Will do this tonight when at friends place with laptop.

What about internet sharing? Where do i enable that?
Prescott (11)
421521 2006-01-16 23:44:00 Well if u have dialup you enable ICS through properties / advanced, on the dialup .

Or use that Analogx program I think its called .

If you have broadband, then I dont know . I dont have broadband .

Dont know if this gives u the ICS option under the adsl icon/properties or not .

Setting up wireless is exactly the same as setting up an ethernet network .

Only diff is setting up the WEP/encryption stuff . And you dont need a crossover cable . (if you're not using wired and wireless) .

Also, if you have any firewalls, these have to be configured as well, between both so each can share files, and the Net .
