421176 2006-01-15 04:19:00 Hi there. I've browsed around in Google but haven't found anything, so Im gonna ask here.

I need an ecryption program that would allow me to encrypt a folder, or make it invisible/empty/password protected. so that it can't be opened.
HOWEVER, I'd like for them to "allow" specified programs to open the folders.
like having "trusted" programs automatically open and use the files inside.

This is very important as I need to distribute a program and I can't lkeave any files unprotected.

Also, it doesn't have to be a free program.

Thank you very much

421177 2006-01-15 09:37:00 The only software I can think of off the top of my head that might be helpful for you are the following:

Folder Lock:

CD Lock:

421178 2006-01-15 10:00:00 HI, Thank you for your help. however, I cant seem to be able to set it to be able to be opened by a specified program.

What I need is a program that allows me to Encrypt a file, and ALSO set a program that can open and use those files.
So I can have Encrypted folders, but I'd set the programs that need those folders to run to be able to OPEN them while encrypted.

ex:

-I have an Application that needs a "SOUND" folder to run.
-I want to ENCRYPT the 'SOUND' folder

Now, normally if the SOUND folder is encrypted , the application that needs that fodler won't run properly, it won't "see" the SOUND folder.
So...

-I'd set that application to be able to RUN that encrypted file

I hope that explains everything.

thank you

I think I see what you are getting at but I am still a little confused.
Could you elucidate a little more. Encryption normally will need a password. For example PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). You can encrypt folders using WinXP Pro on NTFS volumes.

If you want to distribute the application then surely you need to supply a password to anyone that needs to use the said application. If you can set your application to RUN what is the point of encryption?

Your SOUND folder can be encrypted.

I fail to see how you can run an application without supplying a password to unencrypt.

Maybe distrbute on CD or DVD with a already encrypted SOUND folder and when people pay you then you give them a key.

Wait. Is that what Microsoft does?

421180 2006-01-15 15:36:00 OK, to make this a bit more clear:
www.winability.com
That is FOLDER GUARD, it locks folders with a password. now if you check the page and then the users guide, you'll see that this program allows you to set up "trusted" programs. that is, programs that can open those locked files while running.
The only problem is that the program Only works on the PC that it's installed...so if I distribute the locked foler to someone else who doesn't have FOLDER GUARD, that folder will appear unlocked and it'll be able to be opened.

I want a program that lets me do that,m yet that I can redistribute the locked folders, and tht they stay locked on ANY computer they're sent to.

thank you

421181 2006-01-15 21:15:00 I'd suggest playing with PGP, Securstar, or Microsoft XP Pro's encryption. It might help you focus your question.

www.microsoft.com

Smart Cards can simplify password management, but it's not free.

It also has a popup/banner/intruder blocker, history cleaner, spam fighter, stops spyware, ads, worms, and hijacking. Looks pretty good. Its also on this months Netguide CD, which came out today, but the version on the site is a later version.
