422115 2006-01-18 04:13:00 Now I have re-loaded zone-alarm after the old version became out of date.

The computer is very long to boot & very long time to close down.

Is there a better firewall (free) I'm going cheap today,

422116 2006-01-18 04:25:00 The IPFW firewall from FreeBSD has been ported to Windows as WIPFW (http://wipfw.sourceforge.net/). It is also under the BSD license.

I use the FreeBSD version, and I recommend it. I have never used the Windows version.

If you do try it, tell us how it well it installed and performed.

422118 2006-01-18 06:47:00 I still use Kerio version 2.1.5 on my main XP everyday computer which is behind NAT. I went to Kerio when ZA was using up too many resources in Win 98SE, and have stayed with it. Small neat and effective.

I have the latest Kerio on another computer but, perversely, prefer the older version :)

422119 2006-01-18 21:13:00 I prefer the free version of Sygate after trying most of the other well known free brands.

422120 2006-01-18 22:49:00 I did build my own Linux based firewall, but I came to the conclusion that at about $150, it's hard to beat a hardware based firewall like those from Linksys.

They boot extremely fast, easy to use, and I suspect are more energy efficient than a PC based firewall.

422121 2006-01-18 23:13:00 one thing to add, for home users the "smoothwall box", linux firewall, external firewalls are generally fairly useless. home pc's NEED some form of application control. not to sure if any one makes a external firewall with remote application control. tweak'e (69)
422122 2006-01-18 23:59:00 Last time I needed a firewall I used Agnitum Outpost (free edition) (www.agnitum.com) which suited my purposes. Pretty easy to setup and see what is happening. Jen (38)
422123 2006-01-19 00:15:00 I think most would have trouble getting past Kerio which is free (limited)
or buy for $14.95 US at a special price till end March at www.kerio.com/kfp
Jen reccomended it to me in this forum when I was running XP and she may want to
comment as to why she does not still do this for others.

422124 2006-01-19 03:07:00 Another vote for Sygate - the last version before Symantec took it over, that is.

I have tried virtually all of them, bar the latest Kerio, and Sygate is my current favourite. The others are fine but the free versions don't support networking. Actually I'm not sure whether Sygate does or not either, come to think of it as I use a router these days, but I think it does.

I don't like ZoneAlarm as the default installation doesn't give full control over what is allowed out like Sygate does. ZA allows some Windows services out whereas Sygate will ask first.
