422069 2006-01-18 02:24:00 Is there any software to switch between speakers and headphones?

When I plug my headphones in, the speakers stop, and sound goes out the headphones. Pull the headphones out, and it goes through the speakers. Since there are also a few different people that use the pc, and some like headphones, some like speakers, I am getting rather sick of plugging/unplugging all the time.

Even worse, my front audio mic port doesnt work, so if I want to use the mic, I have to go right to the back of the pc, under a cramped desk..

I heard that with an Audigy soundcard, the drivers or some program with it allows you to software-select where you want the sound to come from: speakers or headphones.

Can someone confirm this please?

If it is correct, will an Audigy 2 value be fine? (using onboard atm.)

Also, if someone has any tips on how to fix my front mic I would be happy as well.

Thanks

422070 2006-01-18 02:44:00 Another thing, if I got an Audigy soundcard, how does the front panel sound get plugged into it? Or does it stay plugged into the motherboard? mejobloggs (264)
422071 2006-01-18 03:31:00 Well, thats normal . Its meant to cut off the speakers, when u plug headphones in .

BUT, I spose this depends on whether you've got a front panel connection on the mobo (like some ASUS mobos have) .

Like the 2 PC's here are ASUS mobo's . BOTH have onboard front panel connectors for audio and mic .

BUT mine are the opposite to yours . When I plug my headphones in the front, I get sound thru the headphones and the speakers . Why, I dont know!

Unless the Audigy if u decide to buy one, has some kind of connector for the front mic and audio, I doubt you'll be able to connect the front audio/mic to it .

Whats the motherboard??

422073 2006-01-18 03:42:00 I take it this mobo has a FP_AUDIO connector on the mobo??

If the front ports are connected to it.

422074 2006-01-18 05:24:00 My manual can be seen here: www.msi.com.tw

Sound and usb works from the front panel, just not mic.

On page 34 it has about the audio/frontpanel.

PIN SIGNAL DESCRIPTION
1 AUD_MIC Front panel microphone input signal
2 AUD_GND Ground used by analog audio circuits
3 AUD_MIC_BIAS Microphone power
4 AUD_VCC Filtered +5V used by analog audio circuits
5 AUD_FPOUT_R Right channel audio signal to front panel
6 AUD_RET_R Right channel audio signal return from front panel
7 HP_ON Reserved for future use to control headphone amplifier
8 KEY No pin
9 AUD_FPOUT_L Left channel audio signal to front panel
10 AUD_RET_L Left channel audio signal return from front panel

I am pretty sure they are all in correctly. Only thing is the names on the cables are not exactly the same, but I checked them, and they looked right to me.

422075 2006-01-18 07:13:00 Hmm, try connecting the front mic, of yours to pin 1 and 3. On these ones here, the pins for the mic go sideways, not across.

If the mic on yours are on pin 1 and 3, and the mic doesnt work, turn the jumpers around. It makes a diff, with the mic.

Then go to control panel / sounds and audio devices. Audio tab / sound recording. If there's an advanced button under microphone, select it and tick front panel microphone.

422076 2006-01-18 08:06:00 Havn't tried that yet Speedy, just remembered another thing to mention.

When I am plugging the mic into the frant panel, it makes a 'popping' noise through the sound, and on windows sound recorder, it records a spike then, but no other time. Would this mean that it is recieving power?

422078 2006-01-18 20:00:00 Nah dont use a splitter . It can reduce the sound, with a splitter .

If you speak into the mic, and sound recorder does something / moves, its getting a signal from the front panel mic .

Thats how I tested these 2, when I connected the mic . The audio was easy to connect . The mic took some time to get going tho!

If u have something like Office XP or 2003, install the speech part from the tools menu in Word (you'll need the cd) . After this speak into the mic If its connected properly, it'll type the words that u speak .

Or if Opera is installed, install the voice part (and then speak, with a command Opera understands), and see if it works .
