421702 2006-01-16 20:54:00 right, just to clarify things, i do have experience in building PC's, and i am aware that i look like a n00b by asking this question.

I am about to buy and build a nice new system, i wanted 2 graphics cards so i went for 2 of these: BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-011-BG)

I just need to know if this power supply will be able to provide power to it (by means of a molex - PCI-E cable ?): Q-Tec 650W Triple Fan Gold PSU (CA-003-QT)

If there is an appropriate power supply alternative, please suggest it.

Here is the full spec if your interested or i might have made a mistake:

421703 2006-01-16 21:09:00 Wow....

Why not AMD?
mejobloggs (264)
421704 2006-01-16 21:24:00 too expensive,
i know the price of the system is ridiculous anyway, but i didnt see why i should spend £200 more on a slower processor (i know speed isnt everything, but)

421706 2006-01-18 22:45:00 I think the lack of help is due that you're quoting in pounds, so it's obvious you're not in New Zealand yet. There's also a "tall poppy" syndrome here.

To answer your question, you can't compare AMD to Intel based purely on clock speed.

I'm an Intel snob, but I concede that Intel really lost to AMD when they introduce the Pentium 4 many years ago. For the equivalent processing speed, it sucks much more juice, produces much more heat.

More heat = more cooling = noisier PC (usually)

I have a preference toward a socket 939 AMD PC with the Nvidia chipset, and the Nvidia video cards, like the 7800GTX.

At least in early reviews of SLI motherboards, it was simply the most reliable, best performing combination.

Not a big fan of the Zalman FS-C77 Fatal1ty CPU Cooler, either. It's extremely hard to clean. I prefer the Zalman CNP.

You might want to look at the ThermalTake Tai-Chi Case, which is a beautiful, quiet and simple water cooled solution.

421707 2006-01-18 22:54:00 I don't know much but here ( . outervision . com/index . jsp" target="_blank">extreme . outervision . com) is a psu calculator, it will give you a rough idea of what you need, but it should be enough . :nerd:

As for going Pentium, DON'T, I have just build myself a new system and I switched from Pentium to AMD and the difference is huge, AMD do more data per cycle than Pentium, for example what would be faster, a half full wheelbarow, or a full wheelbarow doing the same job? this is what it is like :)

If you read the first post, you will find out that what i want help with and what you are going on about are two different things, sorry but you didnt help me either (and just cos i quote in pounds doesnt mean you cant help me)

421709 2006-01-18 23:36:00 I think you'll find that a 650w psu will be more than adequate. Greg (193)
421710 2006-01-19 02:26:00 Its not so much the watts thats important - yes that is more than enough BUT you need to have enough amps on the 12v as well.
For a high end card such as yours its a minimum of 26a. Fot 2 of them its a minimum of 34a.

Some of the PSUs have dual 12v (12v+ that is) so its the total of the 2 you would be looking at. Like 20a + 18a for instance.

Some examples:
Enermax 485W Noisetaker, ATX 2.0, PCI Express, Dual 12v - 18a/15a

Topower 420W Dual fans, 24Pin, ATX 2.0, PCI-E, Dual 12v - 20a/20a

Enermax 535W, Whisper II, ATX 2.0, SLI Ready, Dual 12v - 18a/18a

MGE Vortec 500W, Dual UV Blue LED, Blue Aluminum Housing, 12v - 34a

Antec 500W SmartPower, ATX 2.0, PCI-E, Modular cable design, Dual 12v -17a/18a

Zalman 460W, ATX 2.0, PCI-E, 120mm quiet fan, Dual 12v - 16a/18a
MGE Vortec 600W, Dual UV Red LED, Black Aluminum Housing, 12v - 37a

MGE 600W Vortec, Dual Silent RED UV Fans, ATX to BTX, Fan control, 12v - 37a

Antec 480W TruePower, ATX 12v 2.0, PCI-E, Blue LED, Dual 12v - 18a/18a

Topower 520W Dual Fans, 24Pin, ATX 2.0, PCI-E, Dual 12v - 20a/20a
Tagan 580W, 24Pin, ATX 2.0, PCI-E, 120mm quiet fan, Xeon/Opteron, Dual 12v - 20a/20a

Ultra XConnect 500W Black, Blue or Titanium, no window, 12v - 34a

Enermax 600W Noisetaker, ATX 2.0, PCI Express, Dual 12v - 18a/18a

Thermaltake 680W Silent Purepower, ATX2.0, EPS12V, Dual PCI-E, Triple 12v - 15a/15a/8a

Ultra XConnect 500W Modular Black, UV Reactive Green, Orange or Blue, 12v - 34a

Antec 480W Neo Power, Advanced cable management ATX Dual 12v - 18a/15a

Antec 350W Fanless, 0 dBA Design, Dual 12v - 18a/15a

Antec 500W Phantom, Silent - 3 position fan switch, ATX Dual 12v - 18a/15a

421711 2006-01-19 02:29:00 amd slower than intel? are you serious?

AMD kicks Intel in every test I've ever read. The AMD processes more instructions per clock cycle.
It's like an inline 6 doing 50,000 revs (intel) and and a V8 doing 45,000 (amd) and cars of the same weight.

What you want are two power supply units. Here's a diy link
www.burningissues.net

and I suggest you google for premade system unit cases - I know they exist because I've seen them for sale online. I just don't remember where.
