421602 2006-01-16 08:48:00 I have a windows xp computer and when I switch on there is a black screen which comes on and there is a message which says INVALID BOOT. INI FILE. Then it goes on to say " BOOTIN FROM C:\WINDOWS\.

When I go to my computer and click on C drive there are some file written in black and others in blue. Can this be ignored or it needs to be fixed? Please help.

421603 2006-01-16 08:52:00 Did u change / add anything to the boot.ini file?

Right mouse on my computer on the desktop / properties / advanced tab / startup and recovery / settings button.

Then click on edit up the top.

Copy and paste what comes up in notepad here.

So, we can see what can be deleted / what shouldnt be there.

421604 2006-01-16 21:32:00 As Speedy Gonzales, said post the following file, and how your hard drive(s) are partitioned:

Right-click "my computer"
Properties
"Advanced" tab
"Startup and Recovery" section, "Settings" button
"Edit" button

DON'T MAKE ANY CHANGES

Edit...Copy

File Exit, DON'T SAVE ANY CHANGES

The blue and black lettering is probably encrypted / compressed versus "normal" files.

As far as the colors, if it bothers you,
Right-click the "start button",
explore
tools...folder options
"view" tab
uncheck "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color"

421605 2006-01-17 08:43:00 I followed the instructions btu when it came to STARTUP AND RECOVERY,there was nothing written in DEFAULT OPERATING SYSTEM (space) and nothing on the drop down list. When I went to edit, what came up on the boot notepad was BOOT LOADER TIMEOUT=30 nothing else is on that list as compared to other computer I have tried to check.
Thanks Please help

421607 2006-01-17 21:02:00 It sounds like your BOOT . INI files been deleted somehow . This file is critical to booting a Windows XP PC, and messing with it can cause things to go from bad to worse: non-bootable .

So before you do anything else, backup your important files first .

If you have multiple hard drives, or multiple partitions, DON'T DO THE FOLLOWING . Disk Manager will show you this .

Start . . . Run . . . cmd
c:
cd\

attrib -s -h boot . ini
[YOU MAY GET A FILE NOT FOUND]

notepad boot . ini
[YOU MAY GET "CREATE A NEW FILE" . EDIT COPY . . . PASTE THE FOLLOWING . REMOVE THE LINE BREAK ON THE LAST LINE: "XP Professional" .

FOR SOME WEIRD REASON, THE FORUM POST IS PUTTING A SPACE IN "WINDOWS", SO DELETE THAT SPACE, IF YOU SEE IT . ]

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

File . . . Save
File . . . Exit
attrib +s +h boot . ini
exit

Reboot, and hopefully everything will be OK . As I mentioned this is dangerous, so back up first .

You may want to append the following to the last line, depending on if your running XP SP2 and have a CPU that supports no-execute protection

. . . /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

. microsoft . com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2mempr . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com
