You need to mount them yourself by using something like this from a root konsole:
umount /mnt/sdb1
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 -o umask=0

This should set you up so you have RW permissions as a standard user :)

422107 2006-01-21 00:34:00 umask sets the default permissions for directories and files when they are created, not when the disk is mounted.

If it has already been automatically mounted, it might not like being given another mount command without the "remount" option. A "mount -o remount rw /mnt/whatever (it's surely not called "sdb1" :() should do it. (I think the "remount" goes in the "-o" clause ... but "man mount" is made for people who have memories like mine).

An FAT partition would be a good iidea, and get around possible problems with NTFS, though it might still need to be remounted with the rw option.
