422055 2006-01-19 01:07:00 I thought that it might have somehow renamed svchost, but it would appear it isn't quite that simple Greven (91)

No, most nasties, that install viruses, trojans etc sometimes install files, which have the same name, (as the windows file). BUT maybe smaller in size than the legit windows file. And at the same time, chucks a few commands in startup / the registry to execute it.

Or like sychost, its spelt differently, to make u think its a valid windows file.

Which in fact, it isn't.

Look is my face red. The entries in processes running are SVHOST
not SYCHOST. The characters are so small for my 81 year old eyes that I had to get a magnifying glass to see them and the V looks very much like the Y. Sorry for all the hoo ha and many thanks to you all for splendid help. This site is a real winner for non geeks like me.

Heaton - you have renewed my faith in the human race. Many thanks for coming back and admitting you made a bloo, even if it's just a small one. Enjoy your pc...

422061 2006-11-09 06:50:00 Sychost.exe is not a virus or the result of a virus according to Microsoft. See support.microsoft.com for their explanation of what it is and does.
Now SOMEBODY is full of crap here! I see the claim that this is the result of a virus quoted in the exact same words all over the net. Is this a net rumor or is Microsoft lying? Or is this page not really MS? What is reality, anyway?
