2006-01-18 01:56:00 | Hi all: I am running Windows XP Pro. I had used this scanner approximately five months ago and it worked ok then. Since then, I have installed SP2. I tried to use it the other day and all it does is sound like it is trying to start then nothing. I think it has something to do with twain?? I checked and it is not locked, I went into the BIOS to make sure the motherboard setting was ok. I can't calibrate it because that is greyed out. The messages I get are 0x10ff0800 and 00070800 I know for certain that everything is connected properly. I even uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times and went onto the Canon site and got drivers but still no luck. Anyway, I would appreciate hearing from anybody who has heard of this problem or has experienced this themselves. I saw an older post that sounded like this but the person just returned it for their money. Unfortunately mine is 5 years old. Thanks.

2006-01-18 03:52:00 | Have you tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it? You may have to unplug the USB connection (I assume you are using USB) before reinstalling the driver. Good luck

2006-01-18 04:38:00 | It is possible you may have to cut your losses and get a new scanner. There have been problems with Canon printers and scanners and XP-SP2. On the Canon site, the most uptodate driver is dated 2003, with no mention of SP2. software.canon-europe.com I had a similar problem with an older Canon FB310 scanner, I was able to use win95 drivers for win98SE from memory, but they didnt bother to update for XP, so had to buy a new one.

2006-01-18 18:44:00 | I have no problem with my Canoscan N650U running XP SP2. So what? That is a different machine, for one thing it is USB whereas the 640P ex is a parallel port scanner. But even more importantly, Canon themselves indicate that the 640Pex is not supported in XP: consumer.usa.canon.com

2006-01-19 01:40:00 | Hi All: Thanks so much for all the replys. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, tried to roll back the driver. Mine is on a parallel port. I have tried changing the parallel port mode from ECP to EPP as per Canon uk site, still nothing. I am beginning to think that it is an SP2 issue and like mentioned above, just purchase one that will work with it. Thanks for all the suggestions. What a great place to fire up ideas, etc.
