422445 2006-01-19 04:00:00 Hello everybody,

When I go into My Computer, My documents have gone I think I may have dragged it onto the desktop and now I cannot drag it back or do anything to get it back. Does anyone have any ideas? When I am logged in as a computer administrator I cannot see my documents but all of the other users documents are there including shared documents (thats on mine too).

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get it back to normal?

~Matt :-)

Have a look for the files first. Explore through My Computer/C:\/Documents and Settings/Administrator/ .The actual directory "My Documents" should be there (That's the actual physical place). If it is, you might be able to make a shortcut and put that in your Desktop.

I'm sure there's a proper XP way to do it.

Serves you right for getting a new computer. :D You knew how the old one worked.

422448 2006-01-19 04:26:00 I take it you have moved the physical folder from C:\documents & settings\username?
If you have, then you will just have to search for something that you had in my documents & take note of where it has moved to .

Once you know where it has moved to, you can move it back to where it came from, or move it to a better place, right click on my documents (on the desktop), select properties, and enter the new location of my documents .

422449 2006-01-20 01:21:00 I can find the My Documents folder alright and I already have a working shortcutty thing on the desktop and I can find it everywhere else its just that it is missing from My Computer folder and from the Administrators My Computer Folder. I cannot drag or make a shortcut to it from its location to My Computer folder because it won't let me.

422450 2006-01-20 01:37:00 So you double-click "my computer" and you can't see the "my documents" folder, right?

Not sure if this helps, but try the following:

START... RUN... CMD
CLS
SET USERPROFILE

[this'll show where it should be]

CD %USERPROFILE%

[if you get "The system cannot find the path specified." then your user profile's in the wrong place; if you get no message, it's a good sign]

CD "My Documents"

[again, no message is good]

DIR /B /A:-D

[there's a space " " before each slash. hopefully something will look familiar]

422451 2006-01-20 01:41:00 Have you somehow managed to give the icon in your Adminstrator's "My Computer"? That might stop you putting another one there .

Perhaps I didn't make my suggested way of getting to the actual location clear . I meant for thos who like clicking on things, going through the "My Computer" on your (Administrator) "Desktop" to the "C: disk" to "Documents and Settings", then to "Administrator" . That one should contain the actual Administrator "My Documents" directory, as well as A's "Desktop", etc, etc . In DOS it would be: "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator" .

If you have a an working icon somewhere else (especially the one with a hand on it), you should be able to "Copy" and "Paste" that wherever .

422454 2006-01-20 02:21:00 Why don't you right click on the folder, and send it to your desktop ?
