422239 2006-01-18 16:29:00 I have a ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard with AMD Duron 1.3 gHZ processor and 512 mb ram. I want to upgrade processor but don't want to do anything until I can figure out my boot issue. When the computer sits off for an extended period of time it will not boot up. It makes sort of a reving sound and clicks twice and won't boot. The power supply has been replaced thinking that is the issue but still same issue. If I leave the computer on in that un-booted state for 5 to 10 minutes it will then usually boot upon a restart. I can tell it's going to boot as the keyboard lights come on during startup. I don't want to put money into a new processor if the board has a problem. If the CPU is the problem then it's definately worth the upgrade. I don't know if the ram is buffered or unbuffered as ASUS says only to use unbuffered ram. Could the ram be causing the problem? I just don't understand why it works fine once it "warms" up. It's getting annoying having to leave the computer on 24/7 to be able to use it when I want.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

422240 2006-01-18 18:18:00 A few things you could try... but it would be quite a lengthy process.

1) Try different memory modules
2) Try another CPU (doesn't have to be the same speed)
3) Try another PSU (I know you said you just replaced the unit... but you never know)
4) Possibly you have leaking caps on the mobo. Which maylead you to a replacement mobo. Hopefully it will still be under warranty if that's the case.

Cheers

422241 2006-01-18 18:25:00 Hmmm, I once had a similar problem. Had to start it with the wife’s hairdryer.

Although I thoroughly scanned it for dry joints the problem was in, or close to, the BIOS chip as that was where the heat from the hairdryer was focused when she came on.

Unfortunately, it took a new motherboard to fix the problem. :(

I'd be suspecting the board too.

422243 2006-01-18 20:35:00 Remove any CD / DVD when you're booting, just to make sure the sound you're hearing is not the CD / DVD drive spinning up.

I'd suspect your power supply is under-powered, past and current.

The sound you're hearing might be the hard drives attempting to spin-up. This does take quite a bit of energy on start-up, but once they're at speed very little energy keeps 'em running. This would match your problem nicely.

CAREFULLY, put your hand on the hard drive while the PC's booting, and see if the vibrations match the sound.

doubtful, you can run one of those durons on about a 200w powersupply.....much more likely from my experience to be the mobo.......as for the ram it'll be unbuffered that's 'standard'.........

422245 2006-01-18 21:08:00 Lack of sufficient power would match up the sounds generated by hard drives spinning up. kingdragonfly (309)
422246 2006-01-18 22:05:00 do you switch it off at the wall ?

if so, the BIOS button battery may be dead ? try leaving it plugged in and switched on at the wall, but leave the computer "off" so to speak for a while, if it boots up no trouble then thats your answer...

A flat CMOS battery will cause loss of settings, but I have never encountered one that would actually stop a PC booting at least to the POST screen.
