422196 2006-01-18 09:50:00 I'm looking for a replacement small business/home MONOCHROME laser printer priced at $1000 or less.

I'm thinking Kyocera or HP? Any suggestions?

PS I wasn't impressed with Kyocera's paper handling and I wondered if they have improved or if HP are any better. I need something that is RELIABLE and that doesn't have problems with paper jams. Low duty cycle & low speed are OK.

Thanks.

422197 2006-01-18 10:27:00 I've lived with HP lasers; a trusty LJII which gave up after 12yrs and a 2100 which has done 7 with only one service. Text has always been perfect; graphics not quite so but utterly adequate. Service chap said it had done twice its duty rating already. After the $300 service it printed like new again (and only jams when I try putting used paper through it! )

That said, I'm looking at a Brother MFC colour laser now - for only $1100. ( Goodbye inkjets - bloody useless machines...) The HP equivalent doesn't rate as well overall and it has no built-in network card.
If I was still looking for B&W and no fancy duplexing etc I'd stick with HP - but then 6 million others here will recommend their favourite brand :)
Don't bother with ppm ratings - its like comparing 0-60 times for cars - you probably don't have the experience to notice the difference or skills to drive it that fast...

422198 2006-01-18 13:18:00 I say stick to the HP's. Theres a lot of better support for them and parts for them are easier to get hold of.
Not to mention they perform REALLY well

422200 2006-01-19 00:18:00 I vote for HP.

Have had experience with Kyocera, the reliability was not as good as HP but the running cost was OK.

422201 2006-01-19 00:48:00 I support several Kyocera copiers/printers, and several HP ones. I've only had one disappointing HP (and I blame that squarely on driver issues hardware was fine.. bad HP..)

They Kyoceras are another story.. the good ones "just go" but I like them a little less, they are just not quite as polished. The cheap ones... don't talk to me about the cheap kyoceras (I think I threw the last one of them out last year)

If you are getting a $1K mono laser you'll be fine with either. Not much of a step to low end color from there though :D

Except the initial cost of the colour laser is only the "deposit".

Consumables (replacement colour toners) are nearly equal to the cost of the initial purchase, and they usually come with low volume ones at purchase time.....

An $899 colour laser costs $635 for the replacement of the 4 toners (good for 4000 pages).

Plus another $340 for the replacement drum, which is good for 10,500 colour prints or 42,000 mono.

Ouch.

422203 2006-01-19 01:14:00 At least the cartridges are usually good for 4000 or so pages. Unlike ink-jet cartridges.

Of course, the page numbers are based on 5% coverage (typical text). If you are printing colour photographs, you are using much more than 5% from each colour. The price per page goes up sharply. :(

No opinion on your two, but just don't buy a Panasonic. If you do you're as silly as I am.

422205 2006-01-19 01:16:00 Actually last time I checked coverage on a color laser toner it was quoting on 15% coverage.. I was pleasently supprised.. I expected 5%
