422958 2006-01-21 01:37:00 Compaq made some weird cases, and power supplies. Also it's likely the power supplies not up to snuff.

The case could be one of the least costly items. More RAM, and a reasonable priced video card, less than $150, would give the most bang for the buck.

I wouldn't spend anymore than $300 upgrading, and save up till you you can buy a complete system.

i do have another case it is about 4 years old but it is a compaq presario 6000

I concur. Either is a expensive big upgrade or else just do the RAM and vid card and live with it.

To answer you question about salvaging parts. Generally, you can salvage all the DVD/CD Drives, hard drives and floppy drives. Maybe a modem if you have one and any cards you may have on PCI cards like firewire, sound (like a good brand like sound blaster).

Does it have a AGP slot?

If it has no AGP slot on the motherboard then you have to get a new motherboard and then you have to determine if your current case and PSU can support that.
