422207 2006-01-18 10:38:00 I have a home network set up behind my router.
Contains Linux box (all others see it as NT server thanx to Samba), Win 98SE machine, Win 98 (first edition), and Win XP SP1 laptop (occassionally I connect it to network).
All IPs are static and within same range. Subnets are all 255.255.255.0.
Now heres the thing:
Linux box, Win 98SE and Win XP can see all others and connect to all shared folders (including 98 first edition).
Win 98 first edition sees none yet can ping all. Win 98 can also find the Win 98SE and XP computers using explorer (Find Computer feature) but not neighbourhood network.
All can ping 98 first edition.

98 first edition has had zone alarm removed (and I found the zone alarm homepage telling you all the files to remove). So firewall isnt an issue (besides that, both 98SE and XP have Outpost firewall on with trusted lan setting and work fine).

Have I missed something obvious?

Edit: I have also checked workgroup name, and all other settings in there (IP, subnet, file sharing, dns settings, gateway etc) all are ok

422208 2006-01-18 19:16:00 Browsing the network through Network Neighbourhood was never very reliable in Win98 (all versions).
The best thing to do would be to search for the computer like you have been doing and then make a shorcut to it on the desktop.

422209 2006-01-18 20:03:00 check these tips (www.windowsnetworking.com) out.

Otherwise just use a lmhosts (support.microsoft.com) file. Also just map the network drives, rather than go through the network neighbourhood.
