1397031 2015-03-23 19:51:00 Got an old Dell E520 here with a Prescott 3.06GHz P4 and 2 GB of RAM so thought I would try win 10 preview on it. The win 10 iso wouldn't proceed and came up with the old 5D error. This BIOS does have the NX option and it was set to on but the installer didn't want to know.

Anyway, found an item on YT that explained how to get around that installer check and it worked a treat. All you need is a boot option that allows you to see and execute a file on the ISO disc. Folder 'sources' has a setup.exe in it. Just run that. Easy.

I just threw an old 80GB HDD in and booted from a utility CD and away it went. This old Dell is running preview 10041 very well indeed.

(I happily use win 10 on my main comp but just thought I would try the above for a bit of distraction!).

Actually its a blessing.

MS need to be realistic with minimum specs, otherwise you get vendors selling hopelessly underspecced Win PC's & laptops .
One of the big issues with Vista when it was released was the woefully low spec laptops it was sold on, making it just sheer frustration to use.

1397034 2015-03-24 08:33:00 That was then, this is now. Even the cheapest laptops run win 8.1 fine now. They will run win 10 fine as well. linw (53)
1397035 2015-03-29 00:12:00 only computers with SSDs run windows well. Mirddes (10)
