1396499 2015-03-16 04:43:00 Hi all,

My brain has ceased functioning after hunting for solution to Internet Explorer Update Groundhog Day.

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit and for several days I've stuffed around trying to update IE from v9.0.8112.16421 to what is being offered by Windows Update.

Currently the update list is:

- Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7

- Security Update for Windows 7 (KB3023266)

I just tried updating to v10 but after rebooting I'm still stuck on v9 above, and Windows Update is offering me the same update list as above.

Yesterday WU made no mention of IE 10, but offered IE 11. Today IE 11 is not on the list.

Has anyone else here gone through this charade and found a solution? Can I just leave it at v9 and forget about updating IE? I don't use IE at all for browsing, only for web design checking.

Thank you very much!

1396500 2015-03-16 05:08:00 You can always try downloading / Installing manually, that sometimes works better. windows.microsoft.com wainuitech (129)
1396501 2015-03-16 05:27:00 Thanks wainuitech. I did that on my IE v11 shift yesterday. The v11 installer required some added files listed as "Prerequisite updates for Internet Explorer 11". When installing these my system said they were already installed. So I went ahead and installed v11 anyway but after rebooting my IE version remained at v9. braindead (1685)
1396502 2015-03-16 05:47:00 I downloaded IE v10 and like v11 it also failed to install. braindead (1685)
1396503 2015-03-16 06:22:00 If they wont install it sometimes is caused by file corruption some place. You can try running sfc /scannow from a command Prompt as admin, and see if it finds anything, other wise some other suggestions msdn.microsoft.com wainuitech (129)
1396504 2015-03-16 06:31:00 Will do :) braindead (1685)
1396505 2015-03-17 19:02:00 Or try stopping the windows update service then delete what's in c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder. Then start the service again. Then check for updates again then try

If you do the above, look at the reportingevents file in the above folder first. See if there are any errors in it

1396506 2015-03-17 19:39:00 I had a similar problem with Vista that ground-hogged SP1. Used an MS Mr Fixit solution and it remedied the prob. One of the things it probably did is clear the folder Speedy suggested. linw (53)
1396507 2015-03-18 03:14:00 wainuitech: sfc /scannow - did that. All ok.

Speedy Gonzales: removed softwaredistribution folder. As anticipated, that also removed my list of previous successful updates. Rebooted and let Windows Updates scan for new files. It found IE11 and a bunch of other updates. Allowed install. WU did not request reboot. After reboot IE was still at v9 (in Program Files/Internet Explorer). On checking WU again it presented the same file list as previously.

linw: didn't work for me.

1396508 2015-03-18 03:24:00 Look at the reportingevents txt file. Look for error codes and post them

Is SP1 installed? Isnt IE 11 an option under programs and features / turn windows features on or off?
