1396176 2015-03-10 23:01:00 Hi Guys,
I seem to have some mental block about understanding
how to replace my DSE wireless router.
It has terrible software that is out of date and won't open unless about 300 attempts are made.

I am confused if wireless devices such as the oft mentioned here TL-WR1043ND is also
doing the phone line in or does it need another device to do that?
I only want one box to replace the DSE.
I like the idea of a usb port to have a HD in.

I am on ADSL and want to use it for wireless to several pcs and light gaming.
The fibre just went up the street so I suppose I should have forward capabilities to cater for that eventually.
thanks for any clues :)

1396177 2015-03-11 00:23:00 The TL-WR1043ND doesn't have ADSL, so if you want to carry on using the current connection you will need a ADSL modem as well or select something different that does have ADSL/Router Combo.

The Router mentioned is designed for Cable or some other type of Modem to be attached to the WAN port.

1396178 2015-03-11 00:23:00 The TL-WR1043ND does not include a DSL modem so yes you would still need a separate modem to use it.
I'm not sure what the current recommendation for an all in one modem/router with wireless is and would you want one with VDSL support or are you happy to stick with ADSL2+ ?

These are cheap but I don't know how good they are www.pbtech.co.nz

Chill will probably have a recommendation.

got that thanks and appreciate the link.
ADSL seems fine atm, can't imagine needing anything faster.
Would like the option of attaching a HD to it.
Will be interesting what Mr Silence comes up with
cheers

1396181 2015-03-11 02:12:00 The TP-link W8980 will let you connect hdd's. It's got 2 USB ports. I dont use it at the mo, but did try it with a flash drive. Worked fine.

Only got this one to replace the ASUS, because ASUS hadnt updated the firmware for it. And the TP-link has GB ports, USB 2 ports, supports IPv4 and 6. And is dual band

The ASUS only supported a 3G hotspot. That was it. It wasnt dual band, didnt have GB ports, or support IPv6

1396183 2015-03-11 20:55:00 Unless you know exactly what you are buying (ie something recommended above) , dont buy from DSE , Harvey Normal etc: toaster shop salespeople dont
know the difference between a router & a modemrouter .
I have had issues going to setup new 'modems' for people, only to find they had been sold a device without inbuild ADSL (ie no built in modem)
:-)

Whatever you buy, update the firmware ASAP.

This is a bit scary. Perhaps its time to only recommend routers with open source firmware ? Gargoyle?
