1384678 2014-09-24 08:43:00 Hi all

If anyone knows how to flush water / oil out of a hydraulic system, I'd appreciate some help.

Problem - I have a Hustler SuperZ ride-on mower with Hydro-Gear pumps and hydraulic wheel motors, one of which collapsed a thrust bearing and spat the dummy. After being taken off by a mechanic who supplied a repair cost twice the price of the mower, I repaired it with OEM parts and thought everything was OK.

Went to put it back on today and found the hydraulic lines full of water and hydraulic fluid ... hydraulic fluid may sound OK in a hydraulic system ... it isn't, it's designed for using 10w/30 motor oil because of the gearing in the wheel motors.

What I need to know is how and what to use to flush the system out of both water and hydraulic fluid so that I can refill the system with the correct oil.

Cheers

1384679 2014-09-24 12:51:00 You have a problem. I presume that the Hydraulic fluid is brake fluid which is either synthetic or vegetable oil mixed with alcohol. You can not use alcohol because it may damage the seals if they are designed for mineral oil (10w/30). The alcohol in the fluid will have been absorbed by the water, leaving the vegetable oil. Your best bet is to drain as much fluid/water as possible, also remove any filter cartridges. Pump some flushing oil through and drain, then put in some 10w/30 and repeat the process. 10w/30 (multigrade) will absorb water and turn milky. It will still lubricate (unlike a single grade oil which separates from the water which causes rust and lack of lubrication).

There is also a product called "Degreaseol" from BP which will flush it out, will not damage seals made for mineral oil, but will dissolve rubber seals as in brake systems.

1384680 2014-09-24 19:25:00 As a hose doctor for the last 15 years I may be able to help. Mostly hydraulic oil is grade 46, 46 is just a mineral oil pretty close to ATF and not far removed from engine oil all 3 can be mixed. Engine oil for hydraulics quite commom Mack truck power steering uses it. Because the old oil has become emulsified drain it out and refill it. The tank strainer may have to be cleaned and the return filter element changed. 46 refers to the viscosity there is a thinner version 32 and thicker 68. It happens all the time with machinery water getting into the hydraulic tank it is not a biggy. Dont let ****heads bull**** you with dumb advice. Drain, refill run and check fluid again repeat as necessary. Let heat do the work for you. prefect (6291)
1384681 2014-09-24 23:36:00 Hi Guys ... it IS a hydraulic system, however, because the wheel motors are geared, the system runs on 10w 30 MOTOR oil ... NOT hydraulic fluid. That's 1/2 the problem, some drop-kick has used hydraulic fluid in it and it doesn't lubricate the same as motor oil, hence the collapsed thrust bearing, pitted gears, etc.

Prefect ... you're pretty close to the mark my friend ! Just been talking to someone else who works with hydraulic gear. Flushing out a few times will usually do it, but he did say to cut the old filter in half a see if there's any metal pieces in it ... if there is, then it's take everything apart and start again.

Thanks for the advice ...
