1384017 2014-09-15 08:47:00 Not only legit, but how the donations are used?

CHILE ABUSE PREVENTION http://caphelpline.org.nz/

My wife keeps getting phone calls from this organization and since she has not been home I have answered.
I have a feeling that something is not right, that I smell something false.

Is there a NZ (or global) site that weeds out the legit charities from those that are basically
a scam (i.e. most of the donated $$ goes to admin)?

Thanks.

1384019 2014-09-15 09:09:00 I doubt you'll find a site for exactly what you're asking for, but I seem to recall that the Companies Office (www.business.govt.nz) offer assistance to identify scams. But try here first (www.dia.govt.nz).

Arnt many charities like that ?
ie $ going to admin costs
And they hire companies to try & collect donations for them , so those companies get a % of everything they collect.

Thanks Greg.

This might be it...

"May 2014
Phone scam claiming to be fundraising for The New Zealand Child Abuse helpline
A number of reputable child/family health organisations have advised that they have no knowledge of any helpline operating by this name."

1384022 2014-09-15 22:39:00 It does look bogus, probably charading or piggy backing off of this legit organization (www.familyservices.govt.nz).

So unless this Child Abuse Prevention Parent Helpline is shown to be legit on a NZ government website,
or other reliable site, http://caphelpline.org.nz/ is to be avoided as it appears to be a scam.

1384023 2014-09-15 22:56:00 Well, it may not be a scam or bogus group, but it is difficult to tell.
I am getting fed up with all the telemarketing calls that we get.
Sometimes the phone rings, with no one saying anything, just hangs up - probably a phone bot checking for a 'live' number.

Even when we get a phone call from a well known legit charity, how do we know it is not a bogus group posing as the charity?

[just now] Heard a knock on the front door. Smiling old couple. "What church are you from?" I asked right away.

Jev Witness :yuck: they said, with huge toothy grins.

Usually I politely say 'no thanks' and tell them to have a good day.

This time - fed up with these sorts and telemarketers - I said PISS OFF ! ! and slammed the door.

The JW's - like nearly ALL religious groups - are simply a business out to get more saps to give them $$$.

No, they want your mind not your money.
Numbers have been slipping, they need more zombies.

Some of them would rather have your money.
The ones that take automatically take a % of your wages each week, now thats a good business plan :p
and the ones that shame you into giving more than you can afford, into the Sunday collection box

Are the nuttier hard core religions slipping in numbers ? or just the moderate religions that tolerated some free thought ?

1384026 2014-09-16 06:04:00 As Spike Milligan once said.

Why was my mother giving money to the church for the poor of the parish? We were the poor in the parish.

We tell them and its the truth we don't give money as SWMBO gives her time to a charity every week instead
