1383977 2014-09-15 01:09:00 There have been calls for the abolition of the Anti Smacking laws.
I propose that it be changed to Anti Trashing.
Smacking on the buttocks with an open hand should be permitted. Beating with an instrument would be forbidden, as would smacking on any other part of the body. No other form of physical punishment would be tolerated.

Based on experience with my 3 sons, smacking was a waste of time. I found that treating them like intelligent beings and giving them a reason for my requests was far more effective. For instance, I never told them not to smoke. I told them that they had the choice of wasting a lot of money and ruining their health or not smoke. None of them smoke.

So often I hear parents telling the kid not to do something and naturally the kid wants to know why? The parent then says "because I told you so"! The kid will probably go ahead and do it just to find out what happened when they did. Less of the control freak and more of the adviser.

So you just killed your own argument for it.

1383979 2014-09-15 03:45:00 Seems like the law got a bit carried away, surely for example smacking a child on the hand when they are too young to understand reaching for the fire is bad is better than letting them get burnt. Both associate pain with fire but one is temporary.

We had a strap in our household growing up, it was seldom used but the threat of it helped keep us in line. I only remember being on the receiving end twice and I don't hold it against my father when I think of what I did. Of course we need laws to protect against child abuse, but a justified smack on the backside is not necessarily abuse.

Anyway I'll leave the actual decision to those who have kids, I've not been that fortunate myself.

1383980 2014-09-15 04:24:00 What pisses me off ( and SWMBO) you see some parent, the kids are doing what kids do, and they dont like it, they tell them to stop and they dont, next thing the parents start counting 1-2-3-4 And so what happens when they get to a number ? absolutely Nothing:groan: wainuitech (129)
1383981 2014-09-15 06:48:00 Parents should always be prepared to follow through. They should also think very carefully about how the following punishment suits the crime. However that does NOT mean beating up on a little one ! I usually found that depriving the offender of priviliges (eg, not having tv, or friends around for two days normally worked a treat. But they were given a chance to redeem themselves by way of an acceptable apology, on the condition that the offense would not be repeated.

Kids fighting in the back seat of the car was an absolute nono, and many times I would turn the car around and drive home again, even if it was on the way to swimming, which we all liked. They soon learned!

just a short note - if your issue was with them smoking, I would suggest they reached an age where smacking them on the butt or hand would just have made them laugh at you.

In my experience, a short sharp slap on the butt or hand is appropriate when they are between 2 & 5. (maybe 4 depending on the child) Younger, and they are just babies, older and they should have reached an age where you can attempt to use reason.

no, it was still on the books untill 2007. thats what the anti smack bill replaced.
while old laws may not be used, because its still on the books it still can be used.

1383986 2014-09-16 02:34:00 People against the anti-smacking law generally miss the point. The law was designed to stop a person claiming "parental discipline" when a child is injured.

It seems to be working well.
