1385230 2014-10-01 17:44:00 That cyclist was doing nothing wrong and yet with the attitudes expressed by many in this thread you would think he had just robbed a dairy at gunpoint , shot a couple of bystanders and is now merrily riding away untouched.

Wake up people and get real, every group in society has idiots in its midst that doesn't mean the vast majority are, bikes and cars are going to go away and with the proposed increases in petrol about to start happening expect to see more bikes on the road whether they be peddled ones or combustion driven.

1385232 2014-10-01 18:31:00 Do Spammers wear Lycra?
The attitude is remarkably similar; take something made for a purpose and abrogate the rights of the majority to gratify their own ends.
A normal user's view of a cyclist is that of a lycra clad a******e imposing his own rules on a facility designed and funded for a totally different purpose.

So here's something that may surprise you: en.wikipedia.org

The "facility designed and funded for a totally different purpose" actually came into being because cyclists advocated for it....

I think cyclists have every right to use the roads but I don't think an American movement has much to do with NZ roads, maybe there's some connection but I suspect roads were built here more because of british influences.

1385236 2014-10-01 21:05:00 I have ridden bicycles in England, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe (when it was Rhodesia). I hardly ever had to go on the roads, except when crossing a road. In London cycle paths connect all the parks. In Stratford upon Avon I used to go to work on a bicycle using cycle paths. It was quicker and safer than using a car.

Painting a line on the road which is already too narrow does not a cycle path make! We keep on hearing about cycling being healthy and good for the environment which it would be, given real cycle paths. A lot of streets have wide foot paths on both sides, including ours which only has about six pedestrians a day. Why can't one pavement be for pedestrians and the other for cycles?

When I was a kid in Kenya I had to know the road code, and my bicycle had a WOF.

I actually recall that there was a similar movement in the UK by cyclists to get roads sealed - will try to find a link.
