1385210 2014-09-30 22:36:00 Cyclists need to show respect for the law. It is not uncommon for cyclists to ride through red lights at intersections. maybe the road rules do not apply to cyclists. Bobh (5192)
1385211 2014-09-30 22:50:00 Exactly. This cyclist appears to have been riding defensively and was not holding up traffic - in fact from the looks of it, there was absolutely no reason for the silver Mitsubishi to pass him. The cyclist was quite close to the Civic in front of him (which is why he bumped into it when the Mitsi gave him a fright), and the Civic was in a line of traffic travelling downhill, so the Mitsi would have gained no benefit from the passing maneouvre. As far as the proposed legislation is concerned, there wouldn't have to be any legislation if cyclists AND motorists rode/drove with consideration. And sorry, the truckies' argument about narrow roads and damaged gearboxes. Stupid argument. Like a human life is worth less than a gearbox! Which is not to say a cyclist shouldn't be aware of the traffic flow around him and show some respect to a vehicle bigger than him. But respect goes both ways....Cyclist travelling at unsafe following distance not allowing himself time to stop. I always give cyclist there 1.5 when passing. But also make sure I close the gap after passing so there is no way for cyclist to undertake further on if possible. plod (107)
1385212 2014-09-30 22:56:00 What a terrible idea.
I give cyclists as much room as I can but ****ed if I will sit behind the ****s.
Roads are for CARS!!!

1385213 2014-09-30 23:31:00 Many cyclists are their own worst enemy's and a law to them selves. MANY seem to forget that there are road laws that apply when on a bike. Wonder how many actually know the laws and THEIR responsibilities and stick to them: (very few I bet)

As for getting "doored" -- its partly the fault of the Cyclist - heres the code:
•Never ride in the ‘door zone’ (the space where car doors open) when cycling past parked cars. Allow at least one metre between you and a parked car.

1385214 2014-09-30 23:42:00 What is this "take the lane bullshit"

If a cyclist is in the middle of the road they will get the horn till they move their ass over.

1385215 2014-09-30 23:53:00 One would hope that, were the situation reversed, these indignant cyclists will happily keep out of my way and politely adjust their speed to conform with mine when I drive down the cycleways.

1385216 2014-10-01 00:09:00 People on the road need to be more considerate, whatever your mode of transport. Some cyclists are idiots, some motorists should not have a licence. When the two meet trouble ensues,That's just the way it is.
Of course bikes are entitiled to be on the road provided they follow the road rules and are considerate to other road users, same as cars.

As far as cyclists ignoring the road rules goes, sometimes it hurts no one and people get their noses bent out of shape over nothing. For example if a bike hops onto an empty footpath to go around a left hand corner when the light is red they are breaking the law, but as long as there's no chance of hitting any pedestrians where's the actual harm? They could of course quite legally get off the bike and walk a few steps then get back on, but is it breaking the law that is the problem or watching a cyclist make better time down the road than you can?

I don't ride in the city, I don't like dodging traffic. When I did I experienced a lot of inconsiderate motorists so now that I am one I try not to be one of those people.

1385217 2014-10-01 00:19:00 Not that I'm defending his actions, but how is a cyclist meant to turn into a right hand side road of a busy street if they're hard to the left? the_bogan (9949)
1385218 2014-10-01 00:47:00 Not that I'm defending his actions, but how is a cyclist meant to turn into a right hand side road of a busy street if they're hard to the left? Exactly the same way as anyone else does, either in a car or on a Motor bike.

Hand signals must be used at least three seconds before:
•moving into traffic
•stopping
•turning left
•turning right
•moving from a lane.

Many don't though, they simply drift over or dart across in front other traffic without warning.

When in wgtn sometimes, the number of times it was observed people on bikes just pull out, don't look, or do some other dangerous act ( dangerous to themselves) is amazing, several times cars and vans legally driving along have to slam on the brakes to avoid idiots on bikes. Actually saw one twit ride into a stationary car, wasn't watching where he was going (he was on the phone texting).
