423745 2006-01-23 04:26:00 If I was you, I won’t even bother as you won’t have the speed (especially the upload speed) to do it well.

Sorry

423746 2006-01-23 04:36:00 I agree.

However, most web developers will run their own server locally to test sites before uploading them to "the internet" proper.

The easiest way is to install Microsoft Personal Web Server: comes with windows (please do not use this to host anything online).

IIS is Microsoft's "official" webhosting product. Comes with some versions of Win2K and all of Win2K3 Server.

There are many linux webserver programs available, the most popular being Apache (http://httpd.apache.org/) (a version is available for Windows as well).

423747 2006-01-23 04:39:00 Of course, even for your internal Web server, Apache is very nice. And free, too. Graham L (2)

Sorry

I know a few people running their own servers off jetstream connections and their sites load fine. Obviously you wouldn't want to use it for a commercial site or anything with even moderate traffic, but personal usage it works great!

In saying that the learning curve, hardware and hassle would be WAY more than the >$10 month you could just spend on a professional web hosting account.

I recommend www.webbase.co.nz (http://www.webbase.co.nz) , Stu's hosting forum also has a bunch of good NZ hosts.

Also make sure your ISP allows you to run a server of your connection as I know of a few don’t & you could loss your account.

Note: I don’t run any of the sites in my sig :), but they are useful sites for people to find web hosts & for web designers to talk all about web design stuff :) ;)

423750 2006-01-23 09:08:00 something I ran across while looking for I forget exactly what... http://uniformserver.com. Excellent free server package (Apache, MySQL and PHP) that doesn't need installing. Just run it out of the folder you put it in. Excellent for those who develop on Windows.
