423395 2006-01-22 20:53:00 Hi :help:

I am looking at a friends computer they just bought over the holidays, a compaq AMD 64 3200+ machine with a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 PCIe 256Meg video card.
After running PCMark05 & 3dMark05 to benchmark the video card, they both told me the GPU Core Frequency was 9 MHz. I also ran PCDoctor 2006 which gave the same result.
Looking online at 3dMark05 or similar machine results, they had the core speed at 400 or 500MHz. Checking online via Google, i'm sure the speed should be in the 400 - 500 MHz range. my questions for help are:
(1) Is 9 MHZ likely to be correct? - any other way to check?
(2) Does the GPU run at a slower speed if nothing happening?

Specs:
Windows XP Home
AMD 64 3200+
1.5 G Ram
200GB SATA
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 3D PCI-Express Graphics 256MB DDR

Thanks for any help/suggestions in advance

423398 2006-01-25 19:52:00 Any ideas? MartynC (5610)
423399 2006-01-26 02:53:00 the card is running fine. probably just clocking itself down.
i have the agp version of that card. amd 2600+ barton 1.92ghz and i score 2052 points in 3dmark05.
so this has made me relised that as far as synthetic tests go i wont see any performance boost by overclocking my cpu when i get a new mobo.

423400 2006-01-26 03:23:00 Clocking itself down to 9mhz?

Even if the performance is as expected from a low level card like that one ( no doubt paired with a low level mobo and a heinous software setup) the system reporting back a false number is never a good sign, Its obvious their is a gremlin in the system somewhere, Impossible to say where or what if any long term effects will be.

I would ring Compaq, Ask them to explain, and then get it replaced for a non-faulty system.Compaq can afford it.

423401 2006-01-29 21:19:00 hi,
i've bought a new PC with nvidia geforce 6600 256 graphical card and when i plugged inn the lcd monitor it started to turn itself off randomly - sometimes even every 2-3 seconds. i have tried the monnitor on an other compuer it worked fine and have also tried a different CRT monitor with my computer and it worked well too. Can anyone give me any hint what can be the problem? Cheers, bea.

423403 2006-01-30 01:23:00 1st off, this version of the 6600 is the vanilla one, ie, slower core and memory speed to that of the 6600GT. Its core should be 300mhz, the memory speed is up to the manufacture's.
I would say the o/s isnt reading the hardware correctly, hence the 9mhz core speed show but actual in 3dmarks.
I would check for new card drivers, sp2 installed?

You could have an older version of 3dmarks!

Although I agree with your views on Compaq, his 3Dmark Scores are fine. I am not exactly sure why his core is reported back at 9MHZ but it's clearly performing at about what you would expect for a vanilla 6600(certainly not 9MHZ). I seriously doubt it is any kind of hardware error, more likely a software issue in the way it reads the core clock frequency's maybe through some lame Compaq version of the Nvidia driver set, definately an ignore who cares!.
