423218 2006-01-22 16:55:00 ive got 3 sticks of adata 512mb ddr400 ram and 3 dimm slots in my mobo. i notice that whenever i put in more than a stick of ram, i experience crashes galore;critical exceptions, programs not responding, random reboots, illegal file operations, etc. i even tried reinstalling windows xp and it wouldnt let me. half way through installation i encounter a blue screen of death. finally i had to remove the other 2 sticks in order to install windows. when i only have a stick of ram in my computer, everything is perfect. ive tested all 3 sticks of ram individually by using them one at a time and ive had no problems at all. ive also tested all 3 sticks of ram on my mates pc and theyre fine. any suggestions or ideas? jason_f90 (3544)
423219 2006-01-22 19:45:00 Silly question, are you sure all the sticks are the same ;)
Have you also tryed 1 stick of ram in one slot if the PC boots, move it to the next, and try (you could have one faulty slot)
Also try cleaning the slots,

423220 2006-01-23 00:39:00 have a look at

www.4allmemory.com

Another silly question, you have'nt been putting one of them in 180 deg out, it can be done and the catches will almost latch down

423221 2006-01-23 02:08:00 Try running memtest86 on each of the sticks in turn. That will show whether they are actually good. (Often faulty memory will "work" (except when installing OSs. ;)) It does look as if the motherboard has trouble driving more than one stick. Have you got all its speeds, multipliers, memory access timing settings, etc, standard? Try slowing things down a bit. Graham L (2)

423223 2006-01-23 09:34:00 i have tried one stick of ram in each of the slots on my mobo and it works flawlessly. i ran several intense game benchmarks without crashes. im 100% sure that all 3 sticks of ram are the same. the guy at the shop confirmed this too. if problems still persist, im thinking of getting a 1gb or 2gb stick of ram. mirddes, the games are good.thnx. jason_f90 (3544)
423224 2006-01-23 09:44:00 Is there a bios update / check bios memory timings?

Crashing games are no fun...

423226 2006-01-23 10:44:00 auto is good. it will run the rame at teh rated spec iirc Mirddes (10)
423227 2006-01-23 10:45:00 I've just been through a similar exercise . What brand of mobo do you have?

I had two 512 D/S DDR 400 and obtained two more 512's same speed etc . My AMD Gigabyte mobo has 4 dimm slots but I found out (by readingthe manual . . . ) if you have all four slots filled you have to have S/S in slot 3 and 4 . . . duh .

Nevermind, I'll just use 3 sticks and have 1 . 5 gigs . I'll waittill finances allow buying 2 x 1 gig sticks .

The PC started up ok but applications and games would just randomly quit to desktop . After a night of messing about I ran Prime95 and memtest . Both indicated errors, Prime95 ran for only 2 mins before halting . . . argggh .

A tech guy from the supplier advised that my K7 mobo would only accept RAM running at 333 rather than 400 if more than 4 sides are used (ie 2 x double sided ram) . I therefore went into the BIOS, left the FSB at 400 and set memory speed to 83% - 333 .

So far so good .

No crashes at all, no errors on Prime95 or Memtest .

Check your mobo instructions and maybe try stepping down the RAM memory speed .
