422975 2006-01-21 07:03:00 Hi, I am looking at getting hooked up to broadband with orcons current offer of free setup and modem.

The modem offered is this

dynalink.co.nz

In our flat we have two computers that would want to use this connection, they are not currently networked, and dont have network cards.

Can someone please explain to me in simple terms if we can use both computers to access the net with that one modem ? and any problems we may have? and how we would do it?

Sorry I am not up to speed with broadband connections, adsl modems/routers and all that.

422976 2006-01-21 07:07:00 First you will need to get two network cards & some network cable.

Have you installed any cards (like network etc…) in to your computer before?

If so .. ask if you can have the Dynalink 4 port router (model RTA 1335) and make up the difference on your bill. They may do this.
Otherwise you will have to buy a hub to share the connection

422978 2006-01-21 08:02:00 Hmm the difference between the 4 port model of that ADSL router and the single port they offer is around $40.

If Orcon won't let you "Upgrade" for a price then you'll have to buy a switch (and cables) for around another $30 (it just will be a bit messy).

It is far easier though that mucking around with internet connection sharing via software. Just look out for one PC sucking all the bandwidth ;)

Read the manuals for the Dynalink routers, they will tell you all you need to know. dynalink NZ (http://www.dynalink.co.nz/)

422979 2006-01-22 09:21:00 Hi there yes I have installed a pci graphics card in the past have had a read of the quick guides etc. this is basically how it works????

Computer one - network card - cable - running down stairs to modem/router

computer two - network card - cable - running to modem/router

Modem plugged into power/transformer - left on all the time

Modem plugged into phone line via adsl microfilter?

Still not quite getting how the connection is made to the internet through the network card but I am understanding it better now. I guess the rest will come to me reading the instructions and setup info when I get it all.

Will we also be able to share files accross our two computers in this set up? Since it is also a flatting situation and we value our privacy are we able to block the other computer from our files and info? if this combo will share files?

422980 2006-01-22 11:01:00 The connection settings are done in the modem, you can log into it with your internet browser. You just enter your username and password.

If you are getting either of the above suggestions, modem(from Orcon) and a switch/hub(for about $30), or a four port upgrade modem, you should easily be able to have your home network up and running in no time, with what you described.

Just need to have a shared folder on each PC to get the network working.
