422898 2006-01-21 03:25:00 Oh dear you are missing the point Jack.

Luckysmum is with Telstra Clear, she already has phone lines and TV with them, it is most unlikely that Telstra phone lines can be ADSL enabled :

See this: forums.pcworld.co.nz and maybe other similar postings.

Cable modem supplied on rental from Telstra is probably the way to go, Murray P can advise on this, and also about providing NAT protection.

However I would advise Luckysmum to talk to Telstra, there is a lot of confusing advice in this posting

Sory. Didn't realise Clear had their own lines. Thought they used Telecom lines. You live and learn.

422899 2006-01-21 03:49:00 Thank you for all your answers. Why I am doing this is I have just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. So do not want to have to sign up for 12 months as by then I may be bedridden, in hospital or in a nursing home. So am looking for weekly or monthly as do not want to be hit with a big bill if I have to cancel before the 12 months is up.
I just went to ihug, extra home pages and I put my number in where it said and could not get passed the "The number entered is not a telecom number". So does that mean with those I have to be a telecom customer to connect with them. I also went to orcon and they want a 12 month connection. Telsta wants 12-24 months from what I seen on the home page if I have read it right, if I do not want to pay the earth. Has anyone else got anymore suggestions please.

422900 2006-01-21 04:16:00 ISPs bill you on a monthly basis. TelstraClear plans start at $39-95 a month. You well also be charged a one off connection fee of $99. Click on link below.

That page is for ADSL, ie if you are on a TELECOM phone line, if you are on a Telstra-Clear-Saturn phone line then broadband is via cable modem.

Telstra Clear are the only ones who will be able to advise you properly luckysmum, and sorry to hear the news.

Whoops forgot the url for cable:

422902 2006-01-21 04:42:00 Thank you Terry will ring them on monday. As about the news no probs as my sister would say "You only worry about the things you can fix" So that is my new outlook. :) luckysmum (1528)
422903 2006-01-21 06:43:00 I feel deeply sorry for Luckysmum. Is there a good hearted ChCh techie willing to help her for free? Surely her existing ISP would "Come to the Party" for the short time she has.
Sorry if I offend you Luckysmum. PJ  :2cents:

422905 2006-01-21 07:34:00 Terry, I think what you said was true. But in recent days there has been a new deal between Telecom & TelstraClear that enables ADSL without a telecom line.

In fact in that url about TelstraClear ADSL, it states that you must have their HomePlan line to get ADSL. This is a very new change.

Interesting if that is so. However the HomePlan line as I understand it, just means that Telstra takes over the Telecom connection to your number at the exchange, similar to the way other ISPs now operate following the changes last august or thereabouts. That is, a Telstra technician, or other ISP technician has to go to the exchange and enable your ADSL line, and arranges the charging.

The arrangement to provide ADSL over the Telstra-Saturn cable is indeed a new one to me.

422907 2006-01-21 08:09:00 Sorry Terry if I did not make that clear. I believe that the very new TelstraClear ADSL service is via landline rather than cable. But you need to have their Homeplan. i.e you pay line rental & tolls to TelstraClear.

From the information on the TelstraClear site, do you think that is the situation?
