423048 2006-01-21 23:51:00 I want to buy A DVD RW. I have been doing a bit of research on various types/brands etc. but so far I cant decide. I prefer the quality option rather than price. Anyone have any recomendations.

423049 2006-01-22 00:14:00 I installed an LG 4167 around 3 months ago and so far it has done every thing I have asked without having to use any disks as "coasters" Arnie (6624)

423051 2006-01-22 00:54:00 Asus. Never had a prob with them, besides a cd writer, which I think is / was a faulty batch or writer. Speedy Gonzales (78)

DVD-ram isnt too bad but not many external DVD players support it . Its not that important .

Lightscribe does the same as a cd printer, it prints text / graphics on the cd .
(Only in B&W, I think, not colour) .

Except, with Lightscribe the burner burns the text/graphics onto the cd for you . And this can take some time .

ie: You burn whatever, then u flip the cd over to burn the label .

Any dual layer DVD burner, will deal with video, and data .

And will do what a normal cd writer will do . Only diff is, it lets you burn to DVD and watch DVD's .

423054 2006-01-22 02:32:00 I installed a Pioneer 16x16 DL drive a while back - excellent - other good brands:

LiteOn, Sony, Asus(tek)

DVD-RAM is like a re-writeable DVD except that it is used (written/read) differently than normal optical discs - it is designed to be much more reliable than the DVD-RW format for high use applications - not really essential unless you really want to trust your RW media .

DVD-R/+R DL is dual/double layer which gives over 8GB per DVD side - discs are expensive and currently only write once - an advantage if you want to write full legnth movies to DVD . . .

423056 2006-01-22 02:40:00 Dual layer dvds down the road are only $6.50 for Verbatim, and $8.84 for Ricoh. Not too bad Speedy Gonzales (78)

Yeah not too bad but insanely expensive compared to normal R media...

DL discs are really only useful for playing full legnth movies in DVD players - that $7/9 per disc is gonna stack up pretty quickly...
