| 1357724 | 2006-01-20 23:54:00 | Hi I run XP profesional OS I tried to install NSW but the installation failed, contacted the Symantec help line but actually I am no further on. The Situation: I see the message "(9999,171) The installation encountered an error and is unable to continue." when I install my Symantec programme. The Symantec Solution: This problem happens when the Windows Eventlog service is disabled. So I follow the instructions to reenable the event log service, i.e Click Start>Run. In the open line type 'Services.msc'. then OK In the Services windo, in the right pane, I scroll down the list of services to where the Event Log should be (between Error reporting Services and Fast User switching, but the Event log entry is not present. It has to be there but where. Without it I canna install, so I'm hoping someone else has resolved this problem of the missing event log. Cheers Cam |

I tried that but the Event Log service is not actually listed in the services. This is my problem, any ideas on how to get it back. Here is what I found in the Management Console "The Eventlog Starts the Event Log service. The Event Log service logs event messages issued by programs and Windows XP. Event Log reports contain information that can be useful in diagnosing problems. Reports are viewed in Event Viewer. The Event Log service must be started prior to using Event Viewer to view the logged events. You cannot stop or pause the Event Log service" :help: |

| 1357727 | 2006-01-21 03:03:00 | Is there a previous version of any Norton program on the hdd?? I would uninstall it if there is, then use ccleaner (http://www . ccleaner . com) run this, then click on run cleaner first . Then delete whatever Nortons folder is on the hdd now . Then go to: C:\Documents and Settings\all users folder\application data . See if there's any Symantec folders here . Delete them, then go to C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\application data . See if there are any Symantec folders here . Delete them . Then go back to ccleaner and click on Issues/scan for issues . And delete any Symantec entries that appear . Then try reinstalling NSW . This error, according to the Symantec site also means that something (as in files that are about to be installed) may also be damaged . |

I saw on another forum someone had the same eventlog service problem, but no solution . Why do some programmes need it and others not . If I can't make it work I'll send it back to where I bought it . . The rootkit - well it was only a matter of time . . . . . . Cheers |

| 1357731 | 2006-01-21 19:37:00 | Ok then . Good thing I dont use System Works then  Umm I meant previous versions of SW Cam . Not other programs from Symantec . ie: Winfax . You have to uninstall . Why are you trying to remove Winfax manually anyway?? Doesn't it appear in Add/remove programs? Dunno why some programs need Eventlog service enabled . Best people to ask, would be the people who made the program . |

| 1357733 | 2007-02-18 03:18:00 | I kept getting that error, then I realized that AutoUpdate hadn't uninstalled properly - so I did it via the control panel's "install/remove software". I saw the same error again, but killed it by right-clicking on the top bar and then selecting "close". I'm not sure which bit did the job, but it's done! The install completed properly this time. | kevfirst (17187) | ||
