| 422888 | 2006-01-20 22:17:00 | Hi, I am thinking of getting broadband (am on dial up now) How easy to set up is it . As I am a woman :) and I live alone, :) and are the modems external that you get free. I am running a Compaq presario S3060An, memory 256mb, hard drive 40gb. If you need to know anything else please ask. | luckysmum (1528) | ||

You'll get lots of help here if you have trouble - remember that your dial-up connection will stay on for a while after you get your adsl set up. Also, the likes of Xtra have great support too if you have difficulties. |

Your phoneline should be more than enof to be ready for jetstream but if you have too many phones at home you may requrie a technician to alter the wirings so that your phonesets don't need a filter. Becos if you have like 5 phones or more the line filters per phone will add up, you may as well pay $100 I think to get the lines altered. Telecom dropped the 2Mbit plan down by $10 a friend in chc just got it a week ago. He is conservative with his wife both don't know much about it, they didn't even asked me and got it then told me. But they may have had someone to help them. Also 512k and 256k packages available. If you are on dialup, then BB can't be that hard to connect up. |

You should have no problem, the external "router modems" are very straightforward to set up. You need to consider either getting a professional install for the line socket required, or fitting plug-in filters on everything else connected to the phone line now (apart from the ADSL modem) though. |

The ones Xtra gives away (they offer an ethernet connection) when they run promotions are simple enough to set up. All you need to do is plug it in, go to the address 10.1.1.1 in your web browser and type in your username and password. I don't know exactly what Windows requires you to do, but with Mac OS X you just select share your connection from ethernet (or wireless if the modem is plugged into a wireless network ect) in the sharing preferences and you're done. :) Edit: You need to consider either getting a professional install for the line socket required, or fitting plug-in filters on everything else connected to the phone line now (apart from the ADSL modem) though.Ah, yes. I forgot to mention you need a line filter for each phone/fax/other you have plugged into a telephone plug. |

| 422895 | 2006-01-20 23:36:00 | :) Yes I have XP. I only have the two lines one for the puter and one for the phone. Does the filters needed include the sky tv plug? I am in Christchurchch, and my land line is telstra clear or paradise. I have my phone,tv and computer (dial up) with them Can I still get Broadband off someone else while staying with telstra for my tv and phone? Or can anyone suggest a good one for the Christchurch area. Preferably with free modem. Are most of these 12 month connections. Or can I go month by month? |

Or can anyone suggest a good one for the Christchurch area. Preferably with free modem. Are most of these 12 month connections. Or can I go month by month? Firstly, if you couple "toll calls" with your broadband supplier you will get a $10 discount on monthly bbroadband charge. Buy a line splitter. Unplug you phone from the jack point and replace it with the splitter. Plug your phone into the splitter. Buy or procure an ADSL modem. I would suggest a simple modem. Most people reccomend an ethernet router, but if you are not on a network this is completely unnecessary. A simple USB, ADSL modem is all you need. It's easier to install and is just as fast and reliable as the other. Plug your modem into the other socket on the splitter. And then plug the cable from the modem into a USB socket. The modem is now all ready. Then install the driver. You will get a CD with the modem. Read the instructions on how to do this. They're easy to follow. It is not realy important who you sign up with. If you are happy with your present ISP stay with them. If you get a "free modem" then you will probably have to sign up for a year. |

| 422897 | 2006-01-21 03:21:00 | Oh dear you are missing the point Jack. Luckysmum is with Telstra Clear, she already has phone lines and TV with them, it is most unlikely that Telstra phone lines can be ADSL enabled : See this: forums.pcworld.co.nz and maybe other similar postings. Cable modem supplied on rental from Telstra is probably the way to go, Murray P can advise on this, and also about providing NAT protection. However I would advise Luckysmum to talk to Telstra, there is a lot of confusing advice in this posting |
