424167 2006-01-25 00:04:00 I'm well aware that this is PC World, not Mac World, but I trust your opinions and extensive knowledge. I'm trying to get a gauge on the value of the following laptop:

Apple iBook G4
14.1" display
1.3GHz
512MB DDR RAM
60 GB HDD
DVDRW (Superdrive)
Built-in AirPort Extreme

It seems to be less than a year old, though I can't be absolutely sure.

Any ideas what this might be worth? I see that the 1.42GHz iBook is selling for $2400+ on DSE?

424168 2006-01-25 00:36:00 Best place to check would be trade me plod (107)
424169 2006-01-25 00:42:00 I would if I could, but I can't access TM from work :( pixeldust (6619)
424170 2006-01-25 01:00:00 one is still going for around $1000 (but the 12'' model) on TradeMe.
Another has reached reserve at $1500.

Yep, at least $1500 I'd say.
Personally I'd never pay near that as the iBooks are slow and unreliable.

Now you've done it  You've committed an act of sacriledge against Apple. Let the carnage begin. :-)

Even Apple users would agree (me being one of them).

Case in point - just saw an iBook today that had the good old faulty logic board with lots of odd video artifacts going on. Out of warranty (or an Apple repair program too) - owner obviously not happy - was burned with a powerbook too.

Even the Apple reps know there are duds out there..

Flame on.

424174 2006-01-25 05:19:00 A friend of mine was given one of those . It didn't work . I connected a 24 V supply with a bit of careful jiggling of connectors and managed to see a few cryptic icons . I found that they are not meant to be dismantled by the average user . The suggestion was that it might have been left outside and got water in . No apparent signs of this on the motherboard . After more playing around we got a CD with the OS . Wouldn't start . Found a web site with instructions on dismantling . To get to the hard disk took removal of over 30 screws, of about four different sizes . Three different heads . The site gives three pages to be printed out to tape the screws to, so they can go back in the right holes . An old but working HD didn't help .

The guy took it the local dealers after I had reassembled it (with no bits left over) . They fixed it . For nothing . :D Apparently there's a known syndrome in which the HD dies, and that stops the CD/DVD, too .

It looks nice . But it's still an Apple, and I can't get my head around their OSs . At that price, my friend is willing to learn it . He had to buy a power supply for it .

424175 2006-01-25 18:35:00 OK, maybe I should rephrase, rather than asking what it is worth. I paid $850 for it, did I get ripped off? I haven't a clue really, since I haven't purchased a Mac before and really have no prior experience with them. pixeldust (6619)

Nope - I think you got quite a bargin there (as long as it can survive a few years).
